Responsibilities
The Registered Nurse, RN, Operating Room develops patient care standards, assesses the health needs of patients and plans, implements and evaluates care for surgical patient.
Registered Nurse, RN, Operating Room utilizes specialized knowledge and skills for direct patient care, for teaching patient and staff and for evaluating the clinical performance of nursing personnel.
Registered Nurse, RN, Operating Room acts as a resources person for all levels in the clinical area.
Essential Functions :
- Assesses and monitors the overall needs of patients and family. Ensures that the required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
- Develops and utilizes verbal communication skills to obtain and / or provide information regarding adolescent, adult and geriatric patient / significant other.
Communicates effectively with members of the healthcare team.
- Implements accepted standards of documentation on patient electronic medical records and other hospital forms to assure that information affecting a patient, significant other or member of the healthcare team is properly recorded.
- Assumes leadership roles and delegates appropriately.
- Functions as a preceptor or mentor as needed.
- Accepts assignments in a positive and professional manner.
- Assertively communicates concerns, issues and information through appropriate channels.
- Identifies continuing education needs and seeks appropriate educational opportunities to enhance professional development.
- Assists in the orientation of new employees or employees new to the unit, according to established procedures, to promote education within the Nursing Department and developing personal leadership skills.
- Participates in unit-based / hospital-wide committees / task forces that support the mission of the hospital.
- Collects subjective and / or objective data systematically and routinely by using physical assessment skills to identify and prioritize the patient’s actual and / or potential problems or needs.
- Completes admission assessment within eight hours to establish a database.
- Interprets and correlates diagnostic data with physical findings on an ongoing basis to assess the patient and plan appropriate intervention.
- Establishes an appropriate plan of care based on adolescent / adult / geriatric assessment and identified problems within 24 hours in order to provide direction for caregivers.
- Establishes goals that are mutually acceptable with the patient and / or significant other to set achievable outcomes.
- Initiates discharge-planning process by identifying post-hospital care needs. Collaborates with healthcare team members to meet those needs.
- Establishes a teaching plan based on identified educational needs of the patient and significant other.
- Coordinates plan of care and collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to implement care.
- Demonstrates competency in performance of skills necessary to provide care to acutely ill adolescent, adult and geriatric patients by following approved standards to provide safe care.
- Implements physicians’ order and nursing plan of care according to established standards.
- Administers medications safely according to established policies and procedures.
- Teaches patient and / or significant others to meet identified needs, and documents progress and response to teaching.
- Organizes and establishes priorities for workload to complete assignments within their shift.
- Evaluates patient response to nursing intervention to revise / update the plan of care.
- Evaluates patient and significant other / family’s response to education, and revises teaching plan as needed.
- Knows location, function and use of emergency equipment to appropriately respond to emergency situations.
- Recognizes potential and actual emergency situations promptly and responds within established guidelines to meet the needs of the patient.
- Understands proper function of equipment, recognizes potential safety hazards and reports and documents malfunctioning equipment to maintain a safe patient environment.
- Acts as patient advocate to assure that patient needs are met.
- Maintains patient confidentiality to assure patient’s rights to privacy.
- Participates in the data collection and in various other activities of the unit’s specific and hospital-wide Process Improvement Program to assure that care delivered meets established standards of care.
- Participates in data collection, review and analysis of quality improvement and nursing research.
- Assures that care delivered meets established standards of care and follows evidence-based practice.
- Initiates and maintains correct sponge, needle and instrument counts.
- Opens sterile supplies, maintains counts, implements surgical asepsis and safety precautions.
- Demonstrates proficiency in aseptic technique.
- Develops a nursing care plan that integrates surgical intervention and anesthesia management using nursing diagnosis.
- Prepares and identifies surgical specimens.
- Ensures placement of electro surgical grounding pads.

Qualifications
Education and Experience :
Associates Degree Nursing and 1 year Perioperative nursing required
BSN and over 3 years to 5 years preferred
Licenses and Certifications :
Registered Nurse in PA Licensed, Upon hire, required
Basic Life Support (BLS), Upon hire, required
RN Perioperative Certification, Upon hire, preferred
