As a proven leader in Renewable Energy, Ameresco is dedicated to expanding its portfolio of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) processing plants.
In doing so an opportunity has opened up for an Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer to augment the multi-disciplined team responsible for designing and commissioning these plants.
This position reports directly to the This position is based out of our Portland, ME or Charlotte, NC office. Some travel to project sites and vendor shops to assist with controls commissioning activities is required.
The amount of travel will vary based on the number of projects being commissioned each year and is expected to be 25%-50%.
Responsibilities :
- Perform all assigned activities in accordance with Ameresco standards and written procedures, in a timely manner, and with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail;
- Assist with selection of PLC hardware, process instruments (PT, TT, FT), gas analyzers, network equipment;
- Select and approve hardware used in control panels, adhering to applicable codes and standards (UL, NEC, ISA, NFPA);
Design PLC control panels, remote I / O panels, termination panels, network enclosures, and other control systems hardware panels using AutoCAD.
- Where required, designs may be used in hazardous locations (Class 1 Div. 1 & 2);
- Review proposals and submittals for vendor-provided equipment, making sure that their controls systems adhere to Ameresco’s specifications and all applicable codes;
- Develop I / O lists, termination schedules, and other documents related to control system design;
- Update P&IDs, Control panel drawings, and other drawings and schematics as needed according to the commissioning drawing revision procedures;
Keep all I&C project documentation backed up on the Engineering server.
- Assist with the development of the documentation turnover package including I&C commissioning documentation, O&M manuals, As-built drawings, etc;
- Communicate regularly with the Manager with regard to any encountered or expected issues with schedule, work scope, or the need for additional resources to solve problems;
- Embrace Ameresco’s strong safety culture during all work activities. This includes following all Ameresco safety protocols, including the use of PPE, LOTO practices, hot work permitting, safe work habits, etc;
- Use PLC programming software (Rockwell Software Studio5000) to connect to PLCs for testing and troubleshooting;
- Travel to equipment manufacturers’ shops to perform control system FAT work;
Use electrical test equipment to perform I / O verification checks on discrete and analog control circuits from the PLC cabinet to the field device.
- Determine the root cause of, and provide corrective action for, any lack of continuity or function;
- Verify the function of discrete and analog valves;
- Use a HART communicator to configure and test pressure, temperature, level, and flow transmitters;
- Lead the setup, configuration, and commissioning of plant HMI servers, process network, and plant data historian;
- Provide technical support for mechanical, control systems troubleshooting. Assist with resolving problems that arise with PLCs, HMI graphics, plant historian, process network, site Internet service, and VPN tunnels;
- Assist with plant performance testing activities;
Provide post-commissioning support for the Operations group with remote plant troubleshooting, controls integration task, and other tasks.
Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications :
Associate’s degree in a controls-related discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in process control system design.
Additional Qualifications :
Oil & gas, chemical, or RNG process control experience preferred.
Understanding of the proper and safe use of multimeters, loop meters, HART communicators.
Experience using Rockwell Studio 5000 software for testing and troubleshooting of I / O and PLC code.
Understanding of the safe use of basic hand and power tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, torque wrench, etc.)
Ability to read and understand P&IDs, control panel schematics, and electrical one-line diagrams.
High level of competency with a laptop computer, Windows operating system, MS Word, MS Excel, PDF editors.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong critical thinking and troubleshooting skills.
