Position overview :

SLAC’s Facilities and Operations Division manages one of the world’s premier science facilities for the Department of Energy.

Our Electrical Power Department (EPD) is seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to join our team. Members of EPD are responsible for providing the electrical design electrical power systems development of SLAC Facility Engineering.

As a member of the Electrical Power Department (EPD) team, you will be tasked with :

  • Conventional Facility Design
  • Support for Design Management of Construction
  • Support for Commissioning
  • Code Compliance Review

Your specific responsibilities include :

  • Serve as the technical expert in the performance of facilities engineering responsibilities involving the electrical design, construction, and modification facilities.
  • Serve as an expert, providing design and technical recommendations in area(s) of specialization. May include development and implementation of programs and systems and interfacing and coordination with / across specialties and disciplines.
  • Identify and resolve complex technical systems issues which may have high visibility and / or high risk / consequences of failure.
  • Serve on major, ongoing, technically complex projects requiring substantial coordination and interface with senior management.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze projects' technical plans and specifications for sound design, conformance with design guidelines and other related criteria, and pertinent codes or standards.
  • Support electrical system design, coordinate projects with EPD and other SLAC groups.
  • Conduct all phases of electrical engineering works including work prioritization, collecting user requirements, conceptual design, system analysis, load study, preliminary design, and development of subcontract technical documentation for detailed design.
  • Participate in electrical studies including electrical systems simulation using ETAP and FMTP software.
  • Conduct technical condition and reliability analysis of SLAC 230kV transmission tap and substation, 12,47kV power infrastructure, 4160V, 2400V, 480V electrical systems for SLAC mechanical and building loads, 600V distribution for experimental equipment, 415V / 240V, 480V / 277V, 208V / 120V electrical utilization systems.
  • Develop engineering design for SLAC electrical distribution, emergency, and standby power systems.
  • Provide support to the Electrical Design Group Supervisor with the following tasks : Planning the electrical system development.

Coordinate electrical system development projects activity with all SLAC major stakeholders, lead feasibility and conceptual design.

Creating, developing, and managing budget and schedule for electrical design projects. Participate in engineering design work planning in system development projects.

  • Research and develop new initiatives and technology in Electrical Power Design to improve service and realize system wide opportunities.
  • Collaborate with a diverse team and interface with customer representatives to plan and implement work.
  • Participate in annual and multiyear project prioritization, planning, and funding; may lead planning in some areas or segments;

develop and review recommendations regarding short-term and long-range programs and projects, long-range programmatic planning and development.

  • Review policies and procedures; interpret and manage policies and procedures for assigned area.
  • Clarify and resolve complex problems spanning multiple areas or technical fields. Implement and oversee condition assessment programs.

Manage assigned projects.

  • Represent department in specific project teams and review committees.
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop contingency plans.

To be successful in this position you will bring :

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related relevant engineering discipline. Five years of directly related experience in Electrical Power Distribution. A Master (preferred)
  • Possession of State of California registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer or EIT with ability to obtain PE license in one year.
  • Experience leading technical or cross-functional teams. Experience managing complex projects or groups of projects.
  • Deep technical knowledge in area of expertise. Electrical design of industrial and institutional facilities. Design electrical distribution systems to ensure facility operations and equipment reliability.

Electrical design software : AutoCAD (electrical), Revit. ETAP and EMTP programs and their application to short circuit and arc flash analyses Applying relevant codes, regulations, and processes NFPA 70E and NEC codes.

SCADA, electrical protection and control, in the management of the relevant maintenance programs.

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of scheduling, project management tools and resources.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with engineering software related to assignment.
  • Demonstrated ability to ensure quality, schedule, and budget in execution of the projects.
  • Understanding and ability to perform / evaluate lifecycle cost analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor and control scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate potential project risk components.

The expected pay range for this position is $130,000 - $172,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory / Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
