The Role of the Associate Vice President for Institutional Equity, Accessibility and Compliance

The Associate Vice President for Institutional Equity, Accessibility and Compliance has direct oversight of and responsibility for compliance with University policies and procedures, as well as and with federal, state and local laws related to discrimination and harassment, sexual and gender-based harassment and violence (Title IX), and disabilities resources and accommodations (ADA / 504).

The AVP oversees the discrimination and harassment reporting and investigation process at the University, the Title IX process, and ADA accommodations appeals process.

The AVP is responsible for maintaining compliance processes that are clear and accessible to members of the Brown community.

The AVP will serve as one of several entry points through which faculty, staff, students, alumni and / or guests of the University seek information on equity-related complaint processes and non-discrimination policies of the University.

In this role, the AVP will provide critical leadership and support for Brown University’s efforts to develop a more diverse and inclusive academic community where all members are valued and provided with opportunities to thrive.

The Associate Vice President directly supervises the Title IX Coordinator, the ADA / 504 Coordinator, and the Senior Institutional Equity Investigator and indirectly oversees their respective teams.

The AVP works closely with the Title IX, ADA / 504 and Institutional Equity teams to provide critical coordination on a day-to-day basis related to compliance including discrimination and harassment, Title IX related matters, bias incidents, and ADA-related matters.

The AVP has access to all bias, harassment, and discrimination reports submitted and serves as a member of the Bias Review Team that reviews reports and determines next steps.

The Associate VP serves as a member of the Campus Life Senior Leadership team and works closely with the Vice President to realize the University’s and Division’s strategic priorities.

The AVP maintains deep and current knowledge of nondiscrimination laws and compliance regulations including Title VI, Title VII, ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Title IX and due process protections as they apply to student conduct proceedings, the Clery Act, VAWA, and FERPA.
