Certified Medical Assistant or LPN

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES : Provides professional medical care under supervision for clinic patients.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS : Reports directly to Department Coordinator.

Duties performed in this position include but are not limited to the following :

  • Performs selected clinical and clerical duties.
  • Enters physician orders / instructions into EMR system

2. Prepares patients for examination and treatment. Takes patient histories and vital signs.

3. Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments.

4. Gives injections and applies dressings as required.

5. Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization.

  • Assists physicians in preparing for physical exams.
  • Assists with scheduling of tests and treatments.
  • Screens telephone calls for referral to clinical staff or physician.
  • Provides general information on departmental policies and procedures.
  • Orders and maintains clinical and office supplies and equipment.

11. Maintains patient files, records, and other information.

12. Compiles and condenses technical and statistical data for reports and records.

  • Attends required meetings, and participates in committees as requested.
  • Participates in professional development activities, and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Performs department specific work as required.
  • Complies with all statutory regulatory policies and procedures.

EDUCATION : Graduate of an accredited Medical Assisting Program with certification, or a diploma nursing program

CERTIFICATES / LICENSES : Certification from American Association of Medical Assistants or Licensed Practical Nurse

ALTERNATIVE TO MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Credentialed Medical Assistant and / or licensed clinical professional.

KNOW HOW : Knowledge of medical practice and care to assist in giving patient care. Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.

Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments and medications as directed.

Skill in taking vital signs. Skill in maintaining records and recording test results. Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public. Ability to maintain quality control standard.

Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.

Ability to communicate clearly.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

Requires sitting, standing, and walking for extensive periods of time. Requires occasional lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 100 pounds.

Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.

Requires exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS : Some exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

SPECIAL FACTORS : Some overtime hours may be required as well as an occasional Saturday.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS :

Must have knowledge of medical practice and in giving patient care. Must be knowledgeable about examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatment room procedures.

The position requires a person who is tactful, understanding, and sympathetic in his / her relationship with the patient.

He / she must have the ability to recognize serious problems when triaging calls and to know how to get the patient serviced in a timely fashion using the resources available at the Foundation.

He / she must have working knowledge of record keeping requirements of the Foundation, both medical and administrative.

Problem Solving : Judgment is required when dealing with different the personalities of both patients and the medical staff.

The incumbent’s duties are almost always performed within previously established Foundation policies / guidelines and physician / clinical staff working relationships.

The incumbent may work independently at times or under the direct supervision of the physician, Department Coordinator, or Director of Clinical Operations.

Depending upon their nature, difficult or unusual problems can be referred to the Department Coordinator, Director of Clinical Operations or the physician.

Accountability : The incumbent is accountable for all care that he / she renders to the patient or should have rendered to the patient.

The incumbent must follow the physician’s instructions explicitly when providing care of any kind to patients. The incumbent is responsible for dealing with patients in a friendly and cooperative manner.

The incumbent must make accurate decisions regarding the potential severity of problems telephoned to him / her by patients, and must consult the physician in a timely fashion regarding those problems.

The incumbent is required to use supplies and materials only as needed to avoid wasting supplies and materials. The incumbent is also required to see if other departments can use supplies not yet used that are close to expiration.

The outpatient / ambulatory clinical staff is an integral part of patient care at the Foundation.

HIPAA Compliance : Full access to patient health information is required in this position.
