The Engineering & Technology Operations Division is seeking a Structural Engineering Supervisor. The Structural Design (SD) Group assigned to this supervisor performs structural and civil engineering design services for the entire utility.

There is a broad array of technical work the SD Group works on, including structural calculations, design, inspections, and studies of hydroelectric plants, electrical transmission lines, distribution infrastructure, and substation facilities.

This position will report to the Civil & Mechanical Engineering Manager.

Here is more about what you’ll be doing :

This position is responsible for supervising and completing work for the SCL Structural Design Group, overseeing the work of 6 design engineers and one student intern that perform "hands-on" structural engineering designs and engineering studies on a wide array of projects.

This supervisor's duties include :

  • Interacting with customers on their requests;
  • Preparing crew work plans;
  • Scheduling and assigning work to crew members;
  • Monitoring progress and performing quality control checks for calculations, drawings and reports;
  • Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) budgeting;
  • Approving all City Light drawings produced by the SD Group;
  • Stamping drawings produced by engineers in the group below the Senior Civil Engineer level;
  • Making presentations to management.

This supervisor is also responsible for a full array of personnel matters such as hiring, performance evaluations, mentoring, training, and contending with personnel issues that arise from time to time.

Projects assigned to the SD Group run the gamut on size and type. Prepare civil and structural designs for hydroelectric plants, electric transmission, distribution, and substation facilities.

Perform or review structural calculations, structural inspections, prepare engineering studies, project schedules, budgets, and cost estimates.

Serve as a project engineer on capital projects and other programs. Review plans, specifications, special conditions, and agreements for work done to be completed by contractors, public agencies, and City Light crews.

Coordinate and review work done by contractors and utility crews. Prepare and administer consultant contracts, monitor contract progress, and review invoices for approval.

Review and check work submitted by consultants and contractors to make recommendations on its acceptability against scope, budget, and schedule.

The Supervisor of the SD Group will periodically travel to remote project sites in conjunction with project responsibilities.

Required Qualifications :

In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has :

Experience : Six years professional civil engineering experience, including two years supervisory experience.

Education : Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology (or a combination of education and / or training and / or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

Certification / License : Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington. Washington State driver's license / equivalent mobility / ability to obtain license.

Desired Qualifications :

You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities :

  • 8+ years of professional engineering experience preferably working with generation, electrical transmission, distribution, substation structures, construction or operation of generating plants, underground utilities, and foundation structures.
  • 5+ years of licensed structural engineering experience.
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Registered as a Professional Structural Engineer in the State of Washington.
  • Experience working with diverse personnel such as surveyors, engineers, operations personnel, electrical constructors, etc.
  • Experience working on capital improvement and / or O&M projects for utilities or other large, similar organizations.
  • Successful track record of managing several projects and personnel.
  • Experience writing consultant scopes of work and technical specifications.
  • Extensive knowledge of industrial safety standards. Experience incorporating and enforcing safety into designs and projects.
