The Student Life & Career Design Team (SLCD) supports Carlson School undergraduate students of all identities at all points in their career development process.

We help students Explore, Prepare, and Experience. The Senior Career Coach will partner across the SLCD team and the school to deliver career services designed to enhance the personal, career, and professional development of Carlson School undergraduates.

The Career Coach / Senior Career Coach specializes as the lead expert in current trends, best practices, student and industry needs for students pursuing 3+ business major / specialty areas.

They will instruct 2 sections of BA 1021 Design Your Life and 2 sections of BA2021 Design Your Career courses annually, and will serve as the lead for SLCD Programming and Outreach Initiatives.

Career Coach salary range : $60,000 - $65,000 depending on qualifications.

Senior Career Coach salary range : $64,000 - $69,000 depending on qualifications.

JOB DESCRIPTION :

Individual career coaching & support for undergraduate students (45%)

  • Provide individual career coaching appointments to Carlson students. Appointment topics include major and career exploration, resume reviews, interview prep, job and internship search strategy, offer evaluation / negotiation, career assessment interpretation, and more.
  • Lead career coaching and support strategy for students pursuing degrees in their designated business major / specialty areas.

Develop expertise about these career fields including skills required for entry-level positions, key employers, selection methods, student and professional organizations affiliated with each function, national career opportunities, alumni connections, and specific needs of students in each function.

  • Build authentic relationships with students from varied backgrounds, perspectives, and identities, and utilize these relationships to holistically support students in navigating systemic barriers and achieving success.
  • Initiate and maintain relationships with key faculty, major advising partners, student organizations, and Carlson Enterprises.
  • Contribute expert understanding of students' and industry needs in conversations regarding career coaching, business development, employer relations, and experiential learning endeavors for undergraduate students.
  • Create innovative career programs and events for specialty areas in alignment with team priorities. Assess and report outcomes for assigned specialty area student services programming.
  • Create and update career resources to serve students exploring and pursuing assigned major / specialty areas. Content generation may include internal and external digital resources (ex : Key Career Info Sheets, handouts, and videos).
  • Conduct proactive outreach to students within assigned major / specialty areas on a regular basis.
  • Manage participant selection and preparation for in-person or virtual career treks. Lead site visits and treks annually, both local and national, involving collaboration with alumni, employers, and the Carlson School Business Development team.
  • Collaborate with the SLCD team to initiate, update and develop new protocol, tools, and assessment strategies for career coaching.
  • Manage electronic coaching calendar in alignment with team capacity expectations, assessing demand for appointments and adjusting as necessary.
  • Complete observations and notes from each appointment, within established timeframe.

Instruct BA1021 Design Your Life and BA2021 Design Your Career courses. Continuously develop new and innovative curriculum and support management of adjunct instructor community (25%)

Provide expert, engaging, and interactive instruction for two sections of BA1021 : Design Your Life and two sections of BA2021 : Design Your Career per academic year.

Oversee Teaching Assistant and grading for each section.

  • Contribute to development and maintenance of a coordinated curriculum across all sections, including creation of a shared syllabus, lesson plans, classroom presentation templates, and assignments.
  • Develop innovative career content, active learning techniques, classroom assessment strategies, and use of new technologies to engage students in the classroom.
  • Actively identify opportunities to incorporate topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion into course curriculum.
  • Proactively support students in achieving success throughout the course by tracking student progress and regularly communicating with students who are at-risk of not passing.
  • Review student feedback of course and teaching; leverage insights to make ongoing improvements.
  • Engage in ongoing training and development related to best practices in teaching undergraduate students.

Lead SLCD Programming and Outreach Initiatives (20%)

  • In collaboration with SLCD team, develop strategy for college-wide career development programming for students at all levels of career readiness.
  • Serve as lead event coordinator for SLCD career development programs, events, and workshops such as : Career Week, career fair preparation initiatives, practice interviews with recruiters, resume reviews with recruiters, and more.
  • Continuously assess effectiveness of events and innovate to meet the evolving needs and interests of our students.
  • Coordinate tabling and outreach activities on behalf of the SLCD.
  • Create and manage annual SLCD-wide event calendar across all Student Services team events.
  • Collaborate with SLCD student-facing communications lead to strategically market programs and events to students.
  • Develop and manage SLCD event planning annual budget in alignment with departmental priorities.
  • Develop and execute assessments of SLCD programs and events. Create annual program report, utilized across coaching team.

Participate in Undergraduate Programs and Student Life & Career Design Team initiatives that support the development of our students.

Conduct special projects and activities at the request of the Director and Assistant Directors (10%)

  • Work on special projects as need arises, or at the request of the Assistant Director or Director.
  • Support the success of Undergraduate Program initiatives and committees as requested.
  • Represent the SLCD through presentations and staffing college-wide events, such as new student orientation, admission / recruitment events, College Day, Career Fairs, Commencement, and more.
  • Engage in professional development and service related to career coaching. Represent the Carlson School and the SLCD at major-specific or industry-related conferences or career services continuing education.
  • Represent the SLCD in collaborative Career Center activities across the University that are designed to foster strategic partnerships for career exploration.

Qualifications

MINIMUM / ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS :

Career Coach : Master's degree in career counseling, student personnel psychology, student affairs, business, or closely related field.

Evidence of at least 2 years of relevant experience.

Senior Career Coach : Master's degree in career counseling, student personnel psychology, student affairs, business, or closely related field.

Evidence of at least 3-5 years of relevant experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / SELECTION CRITERIA :

  • Evidence of career development knowledge and skills, including : student development theories, undergraduate career trends, counseling techniques, career decision-making, career assessments, and job search techniques.
  • Experience developing and executing educational programs, including : creating learning outcomes, creation of content, delivery, and assessment of learning outcomes and student needs.
  • Directly related experience facilitating workshops, presentations, and / or academic courses with an ability to communicate successfully across all levels of an organization.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Evidence of interpersonal leadership skills (i.e. teamwork and collaboration).
  • Evidence of project management skills (i.e. the ability to manage a project and deliver outcomes from start to finish, amidst competing priorities).
  • Evidence of communication skills, including the ability to communicate with diverse populations (students, staff, faculty, alumni, employers, families)
