Job Description :
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assess physical, mental, and psychological status of patient using age-appropriate knowledge within surgical specialty and patients served.
- Plans, evaluates and supervises care of all patients assigned and within surgical specialty assigned.
- Works collaboratively with other disciplines in care of patients to provide excellent service to patients served.
- Coordinates and participates in formal and informal educational programs, inservices and performance improvement activities to improve technical skills within and outside of surgical specialty assigned.
- Responsible for continued learning and application to practice within and outside of surgical specialty assigned .
- Synthesizes patient care information to formulate appropriate nursing diagnosis.
- Responsible to provide patient and family education to population served.
- Work practice reflects philosophy purpose and policies of the hospital and department based upon evidence based best practices and AORN standards.
- Assumes call coverage within 30 minutes travel time from hospital.
- Operates and plans Perioperative patient care, equipment instrumentation, information systems, preference cards, etc. within the assigned surgical specialty.
- Collaborates with surgeons, staff, OR resource coordinator, anesthesia and outside vendors to ensure a safe surgical intervention after intervention / cost effective value analysis process utilized.
- Coordinates care in conjunction with PAT, Day Surgery, and PACU to ensure safe and proactive patient planning by addressing needs.
- Reviews and updates preference cards within specialty and physicians served.
- Maintains listings of materials, equipment and updates staff on any repair, follow-ups; checks supply inventory for expiration dates at least twice per year.
- Reviews procedures booked in advance and follows up with sales reps and OR Resource Coordinator as needed to discuss equipment, instrumentation, and / or implants needed for new / routine procedures.
- Coordinates with Staff Ed to mentor new Operating Room RNs within specialty.
- Assists and performs inventory with surgical specialty-general, eye, podiatry, neuro, ortho, ob / gyn, gu, plastic, cardiovascular / thoracic, and any others as needed.
Experience / Knowledge / Skills Required
- Evidence of continuing education; at least 20 CEU’s per year-BSN or Bachelors classes may be substituted. If bachelors attained, have 20 CEU’s per evaluation year.
- Demonstrated proficiency in basic nursing process.
- 3-5 years experience with demonstrated skill to circulate and scrub in one or more surgical specialties.
- CNOR Certification within 2 years of appointment and maintained
- The RN will exhibit demonstrated skill in the clinical services which results in optimal safe patient care management within care planned and provided.
- Proactive, interpersonal written and verbal communication skills-evidenced based and best practice.
- Ability to prioritize responsibilities in order to remove barriers, solve problems and plan service delivery.
Education Required
Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
Registration / Certification
- Current RN Massachusetts License
- BLS Certification maintained
- ACLS strongly suggested and preferred.
- If specialty service has a significant pediatric population, such as ENT, and Ortho, PALS certification strongly suggested and preferred.
