Overview

Tufts University Counseling and Mental Health Service (CMHS) is a part of Health and Wellness within the division of Student Life.

Health and Wellness also includes the Health Service, Health Promotion, the Center for Awareness, Resources, and Education (CARE), and Administration and Operations, and comprises approximately 60 individuals with diverse mental health, medical, and public health backgrounds.

CMHS contributes to the educational mission of the University through a variety of activities devoted to prevention, intervention, and consultation alongside direct clinical services.

Serving a diverse student body of approximately 8500 undergraduate and graduate students, CMHS is active on campus doing training, outreach, and liaison work, as well as consulting to the Tufts communities of students, families, faculty, and staff regarding students of concern.

We also provide mental health crisis intervention and emergency on-call services to the campus community.

What You'll Do

The Director of Counseling and Mental Health Service provides vision, leadership, and coordination of mental health services for a multicultural student community of graduate and undergraduate students.

Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Health and Wellness, this position oversees all activities of the Counseling and Mental Health Service (CMHS), including clinical, outreach, administrative and compliance.

The Director of CMHS works collaboratively with Student Life and other campus partners to attend to and support the well-being of students, both proactively and in emergency situations.

Responsibilities include :

  • Provides leadership and oversight of a diverse interdisciplinary staff, including 18 counseling staff, three psychiatric providers, one mental health promotion specialist, and two administrators
  • Creates and maintains an atmosphere that is inclusive, respectful, and caring for both students and staff
  • Supervises clinical staff in both clinical and administrative capacities
  • Provides mental health crisis services, including management of emergencies and highly acute patient situations. This includes provision of after-hours back-up consultation to counselors on-call when needed
  • Works closely with and provides clinical consultation to Student Support Team on cases involving student mental health related hospitalizations, requests to return from Medical Leaves of Absence, and other issues pertaining to students of concern
  • Represents CMHS through collaboration with internal and external partners, including serving on committees and being engaged in all aspects of mental health on campus
  • Monitors and modifies data collection systems for CMHS for indicators such as utilization, acuity, student satisfaction, etc.
  • Serves as a member of both the Health and Wellness and Student Life Leadership Teams
  • Leads CMHS Leadership Team

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements :

  • One of the following degrees required :
  • Doctorate in Psychology, Counseling, or Social Work. Ph. D. or Psy. D. from an APA-Accredited program
  • MSW accredited by CSWE, and active LICSW licensure
  • Board Certified Psychiatrist (MD)
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
  • Current licensure as a mental health professional. If not already licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Massachusetts licensure must be obtained within 6 months of hire
  • Seven years of post-licensure clinical experience with evidence of increasing supervisory and administrative responsibilities over that span
  • Demonstrated experience with cultural humility and / or anti-oppression approaches to mental health
  • Highly skilled in risk assessment and making sound clinical decisions based on best available information

Preferred Qualifications :

  • At least three years in a college or university counseling environment
  • Three or more years of mentorship or supervision of professional staff
  • Comfort and facility with public speaking
  • Experience supervising clinicians who manage high-risk cases

Pay Range

Minimum $136,200.00, Midpoint $170,250.00, Maximum $204,300.00

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
