The annual salary for this position ranges from $83,500 to $98,200. However, this position ends March 15, 2025 unless additional funding is secured for the program. Benefits eligible.

Position Purpose

The Rev. Francis L. Markey Center for Leadership and Ministry seeks a visionary director who will lead the Center’s work of offering transformative education and formation programs focused on the needs of Roman Catholic parishes, schools, and the wider community.

Animated by the Ignatian vision of a faith that does justice, and with a distinctive focus on women in ministry, Markey programs cultivate skills and practices for serving well in and beyond the church.

Reporting to and collaborating with the Executive Director of the (GPPM), the Director plays an essential role in developing and executing lectures, ministry formation workshops, continuing education programs, and other offerings all of which seek to build just, sustainable, and inclusive communities.

This is a fixed-term position with a current end date of 3 / 15 / 25. The position may be extended depending on multiple factors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Management of the Center

  • Foster the growth, development, and strategic expansion of the Center in collaboration with the GPPM Executive Director and staff
  • Generate topics and themes for Center programs; prepare a well-organized calendar of events on an annual basis.
  • Develop and carry out outstanding programs in accordance with university and GPPM policies and procedures.
  • Manage the budget and financial accounts for Center programs and services.
  • Develop professional-grade marketing and communications, including the Center’s website, social media, newsletters, and other materials that promote events and share information about Markey Center and GPPM programming.
  • Build strong collaborations with university programs and Centers, as well as external partnerships with parishes and communities within and beyond California.
  • Work closely with GPPM staff to resolve challenges that hinder the Center’s success.

Key areas of Markey Center Programs :

Continuing Education, Ministerial Formation, and Servant Leadership

Build professional development and ministerial formation programs, including certificate programs, to be offered in-person and online (e.

g., for DREs, teachers, parish administrators, campus ministers, healthcare professionals, etc.).

Develop public-facing education and ministry formation programs related to key aspects of Catholic ecclesial life (e.g.

sacramental preparation, RCIA, liturgy, youth and young adult ministry, Bible study, spirituality, etc.).

Create workshops that address key issues in the church and the world, with a strong focus on social justice and inclusion (e.

g., intercultural competencies, preaching, catechesis, Catholic Social Teaching, activism, restorative justice).

Develop programs and opportunities that cultivate leadership skills for lay and ordained ministers in parishes, schools, and social justice settings (e.

g., parish administration, presiding, preaching, spiritual accompaniment, restorative justice, interfaith organizing, chaplaincy, etc.).

Ensure wide access to Center programs by providing online opportunities.

Fr. Francis L. Markey Women in Ministry Speaker Series

  • Recruit outstanding women theologians and ministry and justice leaders for the biannual Women in Ministry speaker events.
  • In collaboration with GPPM leadership, create and manage marketing, planning, logistics, and operations for each speaker event, including timely payment of invoices and speaker fees.
  • Expand the scope of the Markey series by developing new events and making past events accessible and useful to broad audiences.

Internship Program

Establish and expand an internship program for ministers working on the ground (e.g., in parishes, schools, community organizations diocesan offices / centers; Campus Ministry).

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in theology, pastoral ministry, or a related field required; advanced degree (M.A., M.T.S., M.Div., D.

Min.; Ph.D.) strongly preferred.

  • Six to eight years in ministry, formation, academic administration, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated track record of transformative pastoral leadership.

Essential Knowledge

  • Understanding of contemporary Roman Catholic theology and its relationship to ministry.
  • Understanding of parish and community needs and the needs of ministers on the ground.
  • Understanding of contemporary social justice concerns, especially as they intersect with the principles of Catholic Social Teaching.
  • Understanding of the relationship between education and spiritual formation for ministry.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the Jesuit educational and spiritual tradition.

Essential Skills and Characteristics

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to collaborate with the Executive Director and staff of the GPPM.
  • Ability to build productive relationships with organizational and diocesan partners.
  • Flexible, with strong creative problem-solving skills.
  • Outstanding program management skills; proven record of creating in-person and online programs for parishes and other ecclesial communities.
  • A lived commitment to transformative servant leadership.
  • Strong work ethic; ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to develop the Markey Center for Leadership and Ministry into a robust resource for parishes, communities, and those most in need.
