Position Summary :

The Data Dashboard & Report Developer will play an integral role in supporting the Madison Metropolitan School District’s data strategy by helping to provide timely information that drives district improvement.

This position is responsible for designing, documenting, enhancing, and maintaining components of the Data Warehouse and Data Dashboard.

This role plays a crucial part in driving business improvements, solving problems, and providing valuable tools to school district leaders and staff for data-informed decision-making to meet strategic goals.

Responsibilities include understanding requirements, designing, developing, testing, implementing, and providing ongoing application maintenance.

Additionally, this position involves working with extract, transform, load (ETL) procedures, reviewing and revising reports and dashboard content, and supporting end users directly and indirectly.

This position is structured for in-person and hybrid work environments, and the candidate must be housed within the state of Wisconsin for its entirety.

This position will have access to the newly renovated work space within the Tech Services office at the Doyle Administration Building.

Responsibilities :

Coordinate with the Data Warehouse / Dashboard Supervisor to migrate dashboard and warehouse tools from legacy systems (e.

g. Data Dashboard 1.0, self-hosted Unified Insights) to the new cloud-hosted environment.

Create, modify, test, and migrate dashboards, landing pages, data warehouse resources, and reports in order to meet district reporting requirements and business needs, using the Data Dashboard and related platforms.

Collaborate with cross-functional project teams and liaise with customers and staff in technical, research, and school improvement areas to identify and coordinate new developments or enhancements.

Work closely with the Department of Research, Assessment, & Improvement (RAI) on data projects for implementation on a district-wide scale.

Apply appropriate technical approaches and adhere to MMSD standards in technical design, coding, testing, and acceptance of dashboard content and reports.

Maintain effective communication and cultivate working relationships with customers and cross-functional team members.

Identify, track, monitor, and communicate project-related issues, scope changes, variances, and contingencies that may arise during project implementation.

Manage time and resources effectively to ensure that work is completed within expected guidelines and on time.

Provide support and technical guidance to align architecture and framework with application needs.

Ensure the accuracy and integrity of data and applications.

Receive, prioritize, and provide solutions to enhancement and problem resolution requests from customers.

Maintain and update access rules and processes for access to Data Warehouse / Dashboard applications.

Analyze and translate functional specifications and change requests into technical specifications.

Perform ETL processes to integrate data from various district sources to generate data dashboard content and reports.

Review and revise existing reports based on user requests and suggest changes to existing dashboard content to enhance ease of use and reflect industry best practices.

Offer direct support to end users through in-person, phone, and email communication.

Assist department staff in creating supporting documentation for end users.

Collaborate with key district staff, particularly researchers and Technical Services programming and development staff, to ensure the accuracy and utility of dashboard reports and content.

Collaborate with third-party software vendors, including troubleshooting, attending meetings, and managing support tickets with their products.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities :

Experience working cross-culturally or a commitment to improving one's own cultural competence, including valuing diversity, recognizing personal limitations in skills and expertise, and having a desire to learn in these areas.

High proficiency in the principles, practices, techniques, and application of maintaining / creating Data Dashboard and Data Warehouse resources.

Knowledge of ETL processes.

Experience working with the SQL query language.

Experience in consulting various technical manuals to address issues.

Experience with end user training / orientation and providing direct end user support.

Ability to ensure data accuracy and determine whether tools, reports, and dashboard content are ready to be published.

Ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines.

Ability to transition between projects as demand requires.

Ability to provide clear, precise interactive visualization of data.

Ability to maintain strong and effective working relationships with software vendors, consultants, and staff in Central Office departments.

Must maintain confidentiality for various sensitive data and information, including student records, employee records, school accountability, and teacher performance data.

Strong skills in oral and written communication, analysis, and problem-solving.

Preferred Qualifications :

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Education, Social Sciences, related fields, or equivalent experience.

Experience or familiarity with 4K-12 education systems.

Work experience maintaining third party software or any combination of education and experience that provides commensurate knowledge, skills, and abilities in assisting users.

Work experience in maintaining software, software system analysis, and end user support.

Familiarity with Unified Insights Dashboard tools, Tableau, Microsoft PowerBI, PowerBI paginated reports, Infinite Campus, and / or comparable systems for storing, organizing, processing, and visualizing student information.
