St. Malachy School, an Independence Mission School, is seeking a Peace Room Coordinator to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Peace Room, a major aspect of our student support services.

The Peace Room Coordinator will oversee the day to day operations of the Peace Room, including supporting students who visit the Peace Room, implementing strategies for de-escalation and self efficacy, and helping students receive the support they need and return to class for learning as quickly as possible.

This role involves providing support, guidance, and intervention to help students develop appropriate behavior and social skills.

The Peace Room Coordinator will support with data collection and analysis of to ensure our supports are informed by data and best meeting the needs of students.

The Peace Room Coordinator will oversee utilization and maintenance of Peace Room supplies, equipment, and tools. The Peace Room Coordinator will work directly with students to provide first- and second-level supports for students in need.

The Peace Room Coordinator will be supported directly by the Dean of Students as well as by the leadership team, and will work closely with teachers, counselors, and administrators to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Provide support to students who visit the Peace Room
  • Oversee scheduling of Peace Room hours to ensure supports are available and provided based on behavior trends and needs
  • Provide one-on-one or small group support to students with behavioral challenges.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans and strategies to help students improve their behavior and social skills.
  • Assist in de-escalating disruptive behavior and promote a calm and safe classroom environment.
  • Provide emotional support to students during difficult moments.
  • Encourage positive peer interactions and promote a supportive classroom community.

Collaboration :

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and school staff to identify students in need of behavioral support and develop individualized plans.
  • Attend meetings and discussions to share insights and observations regarding student behavior.
  • Be prepared to respond to crisis situations when necessary, following school and district protocols in collaboration with administration and counselor, and relevant personnel

Monitoring and Data Collection :

  • Maintain accurate records of student behaviors, peace room usage, interventions, and additional records related to student supports
  • Observe and document student behavior, progress, and challenges.
  • Maintain accurate records of interventions and student responses to support decision-making and planning.

Ongoing Tasks :

  • Be aware of and encourage best practices related to mental health, wellness, and trauma-informed education
  • Attend professional development and training as requested

Parent / Guardian Communication :

  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians as needed regarding students' progress and challenges.
  • Collaborate with families to develop strategies for consistency in behavior management at home and school.

Requirements :

  • Bachelor's Degree or High School + Experience

Experience : Preferred experience as a Behavioral Support Aide, School Counselor, or Teacher, ideally with a background in ABA or RBT

The Peace Room : Our Peace Room at St. Malachy is a space within our building for students to work through difficult emotions and challenging situations with the help of a trusted adult.

Within the Peace Room space, students can learn or utilize coping strategies, work through a situation or conflict, calm down, or relieve stress, develop coping strategies, work through a situation with peers and / or resolve a conflict they had with a classmate or a teacher.

The Peace Room also serves as a hub for restorative practices and interventions such as Peace Talks, Restorative Conversations, and Mediations.

At times, a students' feelings related to social development, emotional distress, or experiences of trauma become overpowering.

In these times, a student can utilize the Peace Room to work through difficult emotions and challenging situations, with the goal of returning to learning as quickly and productively as possible.

Students can request a pass to the peace room, or a teacher can refer a student to the peace room.

Our Behavior, Emotional, Social, and Trauma (BEST) team is housed in the Peace Room. This includes our Guidance Counselor, our Family Connections Liaison, as well as additional staff and faculty members who support the Peace Room in various ways throughout the day.

When a student arrives in the Peace Room, they are signed in with their name, date, arrival time, and reason for visit. Students have 10-15 minutes to reflect and self-regulate, unless the adult in the peace room determines they need more time and they would then communicate this to the teacher.

Depending on the situation, students choose their coping strategy from options such as; breathing strategies, creative strategies, movement strategies, sensory strategies, or talking strategies.

Once the 15 minutes are over, the students reflect and then return to class.
