Position Summary

The Associate / Assistant Director of College Counseling (prior experience will be considered) will join a collaborative and student-centered team that includes the Director of College Counseling along with two additional 11th and 12th grade college counselors, a 9th and 10th grade college counselor, an assistant focused on testing and technology platforms, and an administrative assistant.

The ideal candidate will be a team-oriented, experienced professional with a passion for working with high school students and families, while providing guidance and support in all aspects of the college search and application processes.

Essential Responsibilities Include :

This position reports to the Director of College Counseling.

  • Counsel a cohort of about 40 junior and senior families on all aspects of the college admissions search, application, and financial aid process.
  • Provide support for students and families through one-on-one meetings that include, but are not limited to, editing essays, interview preparation, college list development, athletic and / or artistic recruitment, and financial aid.
  • Write comprehensive letters of recommendation that highlight a student’s experience through the Upper School.
  • Other duties specified by the Director of College Counseling and the Upper School Leadership Team, including but not limited to, serving as an advisor.
  • Attend Admissions and Alumni events as needed throughout the year.
  • Facilitate programming and presentations for both students and families throughout the school year, which may include some evenings.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities relating to college counseling and college admissions at the local, state, and national levels.

Qualifications and Characteristics Sought :

Candidates must demonstrate a passion for working with students and be able to view the role through an equity and belonging framework, which is responsive to the unique needs of each student.

College Counseling at DCDS is highly collaborative, so successful candidates must be team-oriented.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s in counseling, higher education, or related field preferred.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in selective college admissions and / or college counseling.
  • Demonstrate a strong desire to work with students and families within a diverse community.
  • Possess extensive and nuanced knowledge about the ever-evolving landscape of college admissions.
  • Desire to be highly collaborative while also being comfortable with autonomy. Clear and confident presenter in small and large groups.
  • Exceptional writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in curriculum and / or program development.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Ability to meet and adhere to multiple deadlines and strong organizational skills.
