Department Summary

UCLA's School of Education & Information Studies (Ed&IS) is home to twenty-four nationally renowned research centers, three groundbreaking partnership schools, and some of the world's premiere education and information experts.

Education and information are deeply ingrained in UCLA's DNA. Nearly a century ago, a small Los Angeles branch" of the University of California opened its doors as a teaching college to meet the needs of a rapidly growing metropolis.

Today, the School continues to build on this legacy by doing fundamental work in discovering and applying usable knowledge at the crossroads of policy and practice.

Position Summary

Philanthropy and the ability to connect with donors keep the school's legacy work in motion. Under the general direction of the Senior Director of Development, the Grant writer will research, develop and report on grant sources for faculty and staff of the School of Education and Information Studies.

In addition, the grant writer will author gift and grant proposals and related tasks, including gift and grant research, strategy (calendar of proposals), and proposal development.

Deliverables will include seeing through to the submission of gift and grant proposals for foundation and government funders;

revision of proposals as requested by potential funders; drafting of Letters of Intent; drafting and editing concept papers and maintaining up-to-date lists of potential funders for assigned projects.

As a member of the Development team at the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies (Ed&IS), the Grant Writer will lead proposal writing services to Ed&IS faculty and staff as directed and prioritized by the Senior Director of Development.

Funding sources will include foundations, corporations, federal agencies, philanthropists, and others; responsibilities include research, initiating, writing, follow up services, and being a central resource for grant writing, editing, and proposal development.

The Grant Writer will research, develop, and report on gifts and grants for various funding initiatives and will support writing for annual fund appeals, education programs, information studies programs, major research grants, Dean's priority projects, and special initiatives.

This position is part of a team responsible for gifts and grants that generate $20 million annually for all units within the School of Ed&IS.

Salary & Compensation

UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

Qualifications

  • 5 years Minimum of five years. (Required)
  • A successful record of demonstrable accomplishments in persuasive writing, preferred track record with written funding requests. (Required)
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with Ed&IS faculty and staff; community leaders;

foundation staff; and donors. (Required)

Ability to prioritize and adjust heavy workload, manage a variety of tasks, and meet various deadlines with changing priorities, frequent interruptions, and conflicting deadlines.

Excellent analytical and organizational skills. (Required)

  • Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research. Experience and demonstrated skill in proposal development for efforts in excess of $100,000. (Required)
  • Experience with budget preparation, management, reporting and cost control. Background and passion for Education, Information Studies and social change. (Preferred)
  • Proven skill and experience using a PC and Microsoft Office Suite to execute daily tasks, and effectively communicate with staff, including but not limited to optimizing all aspects of Microsoft Outlook and using Excel to manage, organize, analyze, and calculate financial information and numbers. (Required)
  • Physical abilities to perform all core functions and duties including but not limited to the ability to talk; hear; see;

manual dexterity to operate a computer for extended periods; visual acuity to view a computer monitor for long periods. (Required)

Exceptional written communication skills; ability to write effective correspondence, funding proposals, creative solicitation materials, and generate grant and gift reporting.

Demonstrated skill in generating clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive (Required)

  • Ability to edit text from many authors into one strong, cohesive document, with one overall tone and style. Strong communication skills to express, in writing, the mission of Ed&IS with academic writing experience as a plus. (Required)
  • Exceptional attention to directions and details; ability to interpret instructions and communicate expectations and requirements to multiple stakeholders.

Demonstrated skill in communicating professionally and effectively with all levels of staff to respond to needs, determine priorities, & manage expectations (Required)

  • Ability to research and learn of regional, national, and international institutional funders for Information Studies, Education, environmental justice, social equity, education change, and other areas that connect with Ed&IS's mission and programs. (Required)
  • Interpersonal skill in negotiating, exchanging ideas, information, and opinions with others to formulate policies and programs and / or arrive jointly at decisions, conclusions, or solutions. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's degree in English or related field or equivalent education and background experience. (Required)
  • Master's Degree Graduate Degree in related field or significant experience as a journalist or in academic writing. (Preferred)

  • Background Check : Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as necessary (Required)
  • 20% Domestic travel
