The Division of Diabetes, in the Department of Medicine, Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, at UT Health San Antonio is seeking a Director of Clinical Research, at the Texas Diabetes Institute, University Health System.
This position is a faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Professor level depending upon academic credentials.
The Texas Diabetes Institute (TDI) is a , sq. ft. building which annually cares for , diabetic individuals, of whom -% have type diabetes and primarily are of Mexican American descent.
This is the largest center in the US that focuses on type diabetes. The center is staffed with full-time endocrinologists, the entire UT Health San Antonio Ophthalmology Division, and members of the UT Health Orthopedic, Renal, and Cardiology divisions.
It contains a full-time pharmacy with pharmacists, a full equipped gymnasium with physical therapists, and diabetes educators / dieticians.
It also houses the Pediatric Diabetes / Endocrine Division.
The third floor of the Texas Diabetes Institute is a Clinical Research Center (CRC) with metabolic beds equipped with indirect calorimeters and infusion pumps to carry out hyperglycemic and insulin clamp studies with isotopes and muscle and adipose tissue biopsies.
It also contains reclining chairs for less intensive metabolic studies, OGTTs. It is staffed by research nurses and technicians.
Adjacent to the CRC is a basic research laboratory which is fully equipped to carry out a variety of sophisticated metabolic, cellular, and molecular determinations.
Three highly skilled research technicians staff this basic lab.
Ralph A. DeFronzo, MD, Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Diabetes Division at UT Health San Antonio, serves as the Deputy Director of the TDI.
He and the members of the Diabetes Division use the CRC at the TDI as their primary site of clinical investigation. It is expected that new CRC Director will work closely with Dr.
DeFronzo to supervise all of the ongoing research activities at the TDI and develop a research program with the intent of obtaining independent NIH funding.

The CRC Director should have a major interest in diabetes, metabolism, and obesity, hold an MD degree, a board-certified endocrinologist with prior experience in conducting clinical research and management of research staff, and be a US citizen or hold a green card.
Individuals with current or prior history of research funds are preferred.
