ABOUT THE POSITION T he Riverside County Sheriff's Office has an opportunity for multiple Court Deputies t hroughout Riverside County .

Incumbents will serve as a peace officer responsible for maintaining security in the Superior Courts of the County of Riverside, maintaining order in the courts, providing assistance to the judges, assisting in the service of civil and criminal documents, and performing other related duties as required.

Competitive candidates will have previous experience working for a law enforcement agency in the court room, on-patrol or as a Correctional Deputy.

The Court Deputy is a journey level classification and reports to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position. Incumbents have peace officer authority while on-duty as Court Deputies in the Superior Courts of the County of Riverside.

When not needed in the courtrooms, they serve civil and criminal documents in the field or assist in processing office paperwork.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Maintain security in Superior Court and enforce the regulations of the courts; preserve order among spectators and participants in court proceedings.
  • Respond to requests from the judges or commissioners for assistance.
  • Take charge of jurors during their deliberations to ensure that legal procedures and regulations are accurately carried out;

answer inquiries from jury members, the general public, attorneys, and participants in such matters as court procedures, customs, and regulations.

  • Take defendants into custody; arrange for transportation for the court and jury to scenes in questions.
  • Obtain and deliver requested legal papers, books, and documents.
  • Transport prisoners to and from the courtroom and detention facility.
  • When not needed in the courtrooms, serve limited civil and criminal documents or assist in processing office paperwork.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education : Graduation from high school, or possession of a Certificate of Proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education, or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.

E.D. test. License / Certificate : Possession of a California Driver's License is required. Possession of a State of California Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.

O.S.T.) Basic, Intermediate or Advanced Certificate. OR Successful completion of a State of California Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.

O.S.T.) Basic Academy. Note : If a period of three years has elapsed since employment as a full-time peace officer in California and / or completion of the P.

O.S.T. Basic Academy, successful completion of the California Basic Course Equivalency Examination administered by P.O.S.

T. is required prior to employment. U.S. Citizenship must be obtained by time of appointment. Applicants must meet the following State of California Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.

O.S.T.) requirements : Vision : Applicants who wear glasses or hard contact lenses must have uncorrected vision of no worse than 20 / 40 correctable to 20 / 20.

For soft contact lenses being worn for up to one year or more correctable to 20 / 20, there are no uncorrected requirements.

Please note : Applicants must have normal peripheral fields and color vision. Hearing : Applicants must not have hearing loss greater than 25dB frequencies of 500 to 6,000 in either ear.

SAFETY RETIREMENT : County of Riverside has three retirement Tiers through the California Public Employee's Retirement System (CalPERS).

Tier I (Classic Member - Formula 3% @ 50) : Applicable to current and former County of Riverside local safety employees hired prior to 08 / 24 / 2012 and did not withdraw CalPERS contributions.

The employee contribution is nine (9%) percent.

Tier II (Classic Member - Formula 2% @ 50) : Applicable to local safety employees 1) Hired on or after 08 / 23 / 2012 through 12 / 31 / 2012;

2) Previously employed with another CalPERS contracting public agency or a reciprocal retirement system, with a break in service of less than six months between the separation date with the previous employer and the appointment date with the County of Riverside.

The employee contribution is nine (9%) percent.

Tier III (PEPRA New Member - Formula 2.7% @ 57) : Applicable to CalPERS local safety new members hired on or after the implementation of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) which took effect January 1, 2013.

Effective July 1, 2023,the employee contributions will increase from 12.5% to 13.5%. A new member is defined in PEPRA as any of the following : A new hire who enters CalPERS membership for the first time on or after January 1, 2013, and who has no prior membership in any California Public Retirement System.

A new hire who enters CalPERS membership for the first time on or after January 1, 2013, and who was a member with another California Public Retirement System prior to that date, but who is not subject to reciprocity upon rejoining CalPERS.

A member who first established CalPERS membership prior to January 1, 2013, and who is rehired by a different CalPERS agency after a break in service of greater than six months.

CalPERS refers to all members that do not fit within the definition of a new member as "classic members". Contribution rates are subject to change based on the annual County of Riverside actuarial valuation.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION : Voluntary employee contribution with a choice between two 457 deferred compensation plan options (Nationwide or VALIC).

Employees may contribute bi-weekly deduction up to the annual maximum on a pre-tax basis as governed under IRS regulations.

VACATION ACCRUAL (Bi-Weekly Accrual) : 0 < 3 years 80 Hours (10 Days) 4 < 9 years 120 Hours (15 Days) 10 or more years 160 Hours (20 Days) Maximum Vacation leave accumulation is 700 hours.

SICK LEAVE : Four (4) hours Sick leave accrual per pay period with unlimited accrual. HOLIDAYS : Normally 12 paid holidays per year.

The actual dates of County holidays are set by governing MOU language. BEREAVEMENT LEAVE : May use accrued Sick leave, not to exceed five (5) working days DISABILITY : Long-term Disability benefit is offered to RSA members through the Riverside Sheriff's Association.

Benefits may be payable provided the member meets the eligibility requirements. POST RETIREMENT MEDICAL CONTRIBUTION : A monthly contribution is made by the County towards retiree health insurance offered through the County as governed by the applicable RSA Memorandum of Understanding.

OTHER : There may be other benefit provisions as specified in the applicable Memorandum of Understanding or through the Riverside Sheriff's Association.
