The Port of San Diego is currently seeking a qualified and experienced electrician to join the team! This is skilled work at the journey-level and the ideal candidate must have strong knowledge of principles, practices, methods and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, testing and repair of electrical and electronics equipment and devices up to 12,000 volts.

Responsibilities include electrical work involving the installation, maintenance, modification and repair work of electrical supply systems, equipment, machinery, power appliances, fixtures or other electrical components.

Additional responsibilities include maintenance and repair of street lighting, electronic and communications systems, instruments and equipment.

Experience in troubleshooting and performing diagnostic repairs on Programable Logic Controllers (PLC) is preferred. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Lead Electrician.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled, journey-level duties in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of electrical, communications and electronic systems;

and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the full, journey-level class in the District's Electrician series. Assignments vary, encompass a variety of electrician-related tasks, seldom require detailed instructions, and require sound, independent judgment and initiative.

Incumbents may be assigned employees from lower-level classes as helpers / assistants and provide on-the-job training to those employees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by people assigned to this classification.

They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified.

1. Installs conduits, wires, pull boxes, switchboards, controllers and switches required in making additions, extensions or alterations in electrical systems;

installs motors, controls, transformers, exciters and generators.

2. Repairs and modifies motor control equipment circuits, planning, laying out and wiring the work; reads and interprets blueprints, schematics and wiring diagrams;

upon completion, makes sketches of modifications made to the system.

3. Plans and lays out work from instructions and / or work orders, using blueprints, sketches and drawings.

4. Repairs, troubleshoots and / or replaces defective parts in motors, generators, storage batteries, switchboards, controllers, conductors, switches and other electrical fixtures in making additions, extensions and modifications in electrical systems;

installs, maintains and repairs electromechanical, electronic and electrical components of electrical devices, including transformers, exciters and generators.

5. Performs preventive maintenance and repair of field and shop electrical and electronic systems, components, devices and equipment.

6. Tests, trouble-shoots, calibrates and performs preventive maintenance on a variety of electrical and electronic instruments and devices, such as fire and alarm systems, heating and refrigeration equipment, pump stations, irrigation systems, lighting systems, and others.

7. Isolates and resolves equipment and system failures in the field; performs bench repairs at the component level in a shop setting;

uses standard and specialized electrical and electronic testing and diagnosis devices to troubleshoot and repair equipment.

8. Operates forklifts, air compressors, cranes, jackhammers, portable and stationary generators, pneumatic and electric tools and equipment.

9. Inspects, installs and repairs interior and exterior lighting systems.

10. Coordinates activities with other sections and divisions.

11. Ensures the timely and accurate completion of preventive maintenance activities.

12. Requisitions necessary tools, equipment and supplies.

13. Plans and lays out jobs from blueprints, drawings, sketches or verbal instructions; maintains records in the form of blueprints, plans and specifications for

industrial electrical and instrumenta tion equipment and devices.

14. Follows safe work practices and procedures and ensures safety procedures are observed.

OTHER DUTIES

1. Responds to emergency situations as required.

2. May assist in training or instructing others in the work.

3. May lead the work of others as a project leader.

4. Operates vehicles to travel to various District locations.

Qualifications

Knowledge of :

1. Practices, methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in the design, installation, testing, calibration, maintenance and repair of industrial electrical and electronic equipment and devices up to 12,000 volts.

2. Electrical and electronic shop procedures and practices.

3. Safety practices, safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.

4. Shop mathematics.

5. Computer applications applicable to assigned work responsibilities.

6. National Electrical Codes (NEC), ordinances and regulations pertaining to the work.

Ability to :

1. Test, diagnose, calibrate and repair a wide variety of electrical and electronic instrumentation devices, motors, machinery and equipment.

2. Use modern, state-of-the-art precision and diagnostic instruments to test, calibrate and repair complex electrical and electronic devices and equipment.

3. Identify and implement effective courses of action to complete assigned work.

4. Read and interpret plans, specifications and manuals.

5. Exercise independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines.

6. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.

7. Coordinate work assignments with other sections, divisions, departments or agencies.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education, Training and Experience :

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and four years of journey-level construction and / or industrial electrical experience.

Completion of a formal apprenticeship program or a recognized technical training program is required. Time served as a District Intern counts towards the years of experience.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements :

A current, valid California Class C driver's license at time of appointment and maintained at all times thereafter in order to operate a vehicle on District business.

A valid first aid and CPR certification may be required and, if required, must be maintained throughout District employment.

The District reserves the right to change or add to any of the stated licensing requirements at any time, as required by law, regulation or business necessity.

Employees may be required to : serve on an on-call or stand-by basis; work on assigned shifts, on weekends and work overtime.

If assigned to perform work at any of the District's maritime facilities, you must be able to pass a background check in accordance with current Federal and State requirements.

Passing score is 70% out of 100% on each assessment section.

THE INITIAL ASSESSMENT (40%) IS TENTATIVELY SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2024, AND APPRAISAL PANEL (60%) IS TENTATIVELY SCHEDULED FOR WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2024.
