Department Marketing Statement

The Office of Admissions is charged with assisting the campus in reaching its undergraduate admission and enrollment objectives in accordance with the University mission and campus enrollment goals.

Department efforts are focused upon increasing the academic quality and diversity of the entering class while maintaining the required enrollment level.

  • Admissions seeks to implement the campus admission goals by providing a number of services and events. Admissions promotes postsecondary education;
  • encourages applications from historically underserved populations and schools; provides admission information to high school and community college counselors, teachers and administrators;
  • provides admission advice to prospective freshman and transfer students; reviews and evaluates applications; develops recruitment strategies and events for admitted students;

reviews coursework for transfer credit; and creates a presence on campus that is consistent with UCSB's mission and high academic standards.

These services are provided by three units within the department : Visitor Center, Outreach Services, and Application Services.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

The Admissions Counselor within the Office of Admissions designs and implements a series of initiatives to generate the interest, application, and ultimately the UCSB enrollment of high school and community college students.

Establishes a statewide caseload of student contacts from targeted schools and systematically follows up with student as early as ninth grade through e-mail, targeted mailings, hosting campus visits, open house events, and making referrals to faculty and campus service agencies.

Engages in collaborative efforts with university units currently sponsoring outreach related efforts and summer residential programs.

Serves as the liaison with schools and organizations outside of the University that work with student scholars to include high school teachers and counselors, churches, and youth organizations.

Conducts visits to high schools and community colleges in order to inform prospective UCSB students, their parents, counselors and educators about admission policies and practices, and to encourage students to apply to and enroll in UCSB.

Provides pre-enrollment advising to prospective applicants and newly admitted students and their parents.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

1-3 years of relevant work experience / training

Ability to travel : this position requires overnight travel throughout California, often for weeks at a time.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in program development and implementation.

Ability to represent the University to K-12 school administrators, teachers, counselors and prospective UCSB students, their families and communities at the highest professional level.

Extensive overnight travel between Santa Barbara, San Francisco Bay Area & Los Angeles.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time :

30% High School and Community College Outreach

The incumbent conducts outreach at high schools and community colleges in order to inform prospective UCSB students, their parents, counselors and educators about admission policies and practices, and to encourage students particularly underrepresented students to apply and enroll in UCSB.

Outreach occurs primarily during fall. Specifically, the incumbent : Initiate a series of high school and community college visits in order to disseminate and articulate admissions policies of the UCSB campus and the UC system.

Meet with parents and prospective students seeking information about the campus. Make oral and multi-media presentations pertinent to the needs and interests of the audience.

Maintain thorough knowledge and be able to disseminate information covering all aspects of the campus including admission eligibility requirements, academic programs, curricula, EOP, housing, financial aid, fees, orientation, etc.

Represent UCSB at appropriate professional conferences. Make on-campus presentations to visiting student groups. Provide pre-admissions counseling to campus visitors and students in campus programs.

Leads College Advising Presentations (CAPs) at school sites, attends College Nights and College Fairs, and represents UCSB at California College and University Days (CCUDs).

Evaluates the academic records of target students in order to counsel and advise them with regard to achieving and maintaining UC eligibility.

Must have thorough knowledge of University application procedures and admission policies and practices. Must have strong counseling skills informed by an in-depth understanding of issues relevant to the academic preparation and success of low income, underrepresented, first generation college-bound, and language minority students.

Serves as a member of the Admissions Selection Committee. Reviews application files in order to make recommendations regarding freshman admission to UCSB.

20% Special Event Planning - Committee Member

Assist in the coordination of special events, both on campus and throughout California, that address the specific informational needs of the scholar applicant.

Develop new initiatives and assist with the coordination of existing special events including the Chancellor's Regional Receptions and Open House.

Liaison with relevant departments, staff and faculty to ensure appropriate campus representation at these events Incorporate UCSB staff, faculty, and students into the program itinerary.

Initiates contact with high-achieving admitted students in order to encourage their participation in the Chancellor's Regional Receptions.

50% Applicant Advocacy

Counsels and advises newly admitted students and their parents with regard to admission, enrollment, housing, financial aid, course selection and other concerns.

Serve as a liaison between admitted students and EOP, Financial Aid, Admissions, Orientation, Housing, and student organizations to ensure all special needs and questions the student has are addressed in a timely manner.
