POSITION SUMMARY

Harvey Mudd College (HMC) seeks a strategic, collaborative and accomplished development professional to serve as its next Director of Foundation Relations (DFR).

The position becomes available at an important time in the College’s history as HMC prepares to embark on the College’s next comprehensive campaign.

Reporting to the Vice President for Advancement, the DFR is responsible for assessing, enhancing and directing HMC’s institutional foundation relations program by strengthening existing relationships and developing new opportunities for sustained long-term partnerships.

The DFR is also responsible for articulating the needs of HMC with the goal of significantly increasing investments in support of the College’s academic and strategic priorities.

As a key advisor to the College community on best practices and new strategies for foundation relations, the DFR will pursue productive, lasting and impactful engagement with top public and private non-profit charitable entities, nationally and internationally.

The ideal candidate will have management experience and at least five (5) years of professional experience in major gift solicitations with strong emphasis on foundation and / or corporate relations work.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Secure targeted levels of private support as a major gift fundraiser for the Foundation Relations Office through developing and implementing a strategic plan for the identification, solicitation, and stewardship of current and prospective philanthropic foundation partners.
  • Manage a portfolio of significant foundation and corporate prospects, maintaining an active calendar of prospect visits and outreach activities.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with development colleagues, Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), academic leadership, and College leadership to align College priorities and faculty projects with the interests of philanthropic foundations and corporations.
  • Lead proposal development for institutional philanthropic grants, collaborating with faculty and staff across a broad range of academic disciplines to support departmental projects and priorities.
  • Translate and shape complex research projects and priorities into compelling fundraising proposals and collaborate with OSP as advisable.
  • Manage the assistant director of foundation relationships, ensuring professional growth and progress toward Foundation Relations goals.
  • Steward annual and endowed awards / grants through individualized recognition activities, including acknowledgment letters, written reports, college publications, special events, and other means, partnering with Stewardship and Events colleagues as appropriate.
  • Track contact reports and other key information on College’s advancement database to guide strategy development. Report on activity.
  • Support and assist in the production of effective marketing materials to enhance development goals and visibility for the College.
  • Serve on college committees and perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education : Bachelor’s degree required

Experience : Minimum of five (5) years professional experience in nonprofit and / or higher education fundraising.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Must have experience developing and writing successful funding proposals for foundations.

Must know development and fundraising principles, strategies, theories, techniques and systems. Must possess the ability to plan and implement fundraising programs with emphasis on foundation writing.

Must possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Ability to gather information from and coordinate activities with senior leadership, faculty, and various campus groups and individuals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced Degree
  • Eight (8) or more years of progressive experience in higher education fundraising
  • Knowledge of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) gift regulations
  • Understanding of accounting and budgeting principles and practices
  • Supervisory experience in managing direct reports
  • Advancement experience at R1 University

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and driving record acceptable to the College’s automobile insurance carrier.

Physical Requirements :

While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to sit; stand, use hands and fingers and talk or hear.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The individual must regularly lift and / or carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Hours :

Regular office hours are 8 : 00 a.m. to 5 : 00 p.m. Hours may vary due to the needs to the department and / or College.

Classification :

This is an exempt, full-time, benefits-eligible position.

Salary :

The anticipated starting salary range will be $135,000 - $145,000 per year. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Reports to the Vice President for Advancement
