At Houston Methodist the OccupationalTherapist (OT) position is responsible for assessing patients anddeveloping the therapy plan of care.

This position provideseducation to patients patients family members and / or caregivers andcollaborates with other health care professionals as needed forproblem resolution and / or achievement of identified patientspecific goals.

As a member of the interprofessional care teamproviding direct patient care the OT position has responsibility todeliver exceptional patient care with adherence to safety standardsand guidelines to ensure optimal patient safety customer serviceand optimum patient outcomes.

PEOPLEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Promotesa positive work environment and contributes to a dynamicteamfocused work unit that actively helps one another to achieveoptimal department results.

Seeks guidance from others andcollaborates with all members of the interprofessional care team byactively communicating and reporting pertinent patient careinformation and data in a comprehensivemanner.

  • Uses therapeuticcommunication which includes active listening and teaching toestablish a relationship with patients families andinterprofessional health care team to collaborate on the plan ofcare.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performscomplete and comprehensive evaluation of patients to identifypatients level of function and to determine the treatment plan.

Develops the plan of care based on evaluation findings andimplements the therapy treatment plan. Practices in a manner thatis congruent with cultural diversity and inclusionprinciples.

  • Provideseducation to patients patients family members and / or caregiversbased on learning needs. Consistently evaluates the patientscomprehension and adapts teaching methodsaccordingly.
  • Collaboratesand communicates with the healthcare team modifications to patientstreatment plan progress and discharge planning for achievement ofidentified patient specific goals.

Advocates on patient / familysbehalf to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concernsutilizing appropriateresources.

Contributestowards improvement of department score for patient satisfactionthrough peertopeer accountability to servicestandards.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assessespatients regularly monitors progress towards treatment goalsmodifies goals and plan or program as indicated. Recognizescomplications / limitations associated with certain procedures andcollaborates with peers to address for optimumoutcomes.
  • Provides inputof physical therapyrelated activities completed byinterprofessional health care team and if necessary adjusts theplan to improve quality of outcome and maintain the safety of thepatient.
  • Identifiesopportunities for corrective action and process improvement.Identifies areas of practice improvements with researchbasedevidence to achieve patient safety outcomes supported by accuratedocumentation.

Contributes to meeting department and hospitaltargets for quality andsafety.

FINANCE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Maintains accurateand complete documentation of patient education proceduresperformed in a timely manner in the patient record.

Enters accuratecharges for services provided asapplicable.

Uses resourcesefficiently to maximize utilization of time and equipment.Selfmotivated to independently manage time effectively minimizingincidental overtime and prioritize daily tasks assisting coworkersas needed.

Meets labor productivity standards by effectivelymanaging established patient loadassignments.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Offers innovativesolutions through evidencebased practice / performance improvementprojects. Actively participates in department projects and hospitalcommittees.
  • Identifies andpresents areas for innovation efficiency and improvement in patientcare or unit operations using evidencebased practiceliterature.
  • Seeksopportunities to identify selfdevelopment needs and expand learningbeyond baseline competencies with a focus on continual developmentas a Occupational Therapist taking appropriate action.

Ensures owncareer discussions occur with appropriate management. Completes andupdates the My Development Plan on an ongoingbasis.

WORKEXPERIENCE

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONSREQUIRED

  • OTTemp TemporaryOccupational Therapist Registered State Licensure Compact licenseacceptable according to current Board requirements within 90 daysor
  • OT Occupational Therapy State LicensureCompact license acceptable according to current Board requirementswithin 90 days and
  • BLS Basic Life Support (AHA)

  • Demonstrates theskills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assignedjob determined through ongoing skills competency assessments andperformanceevaluations
