Department Summary

The Fowler Museum at UCLA explores global arts and cultures with an emphasis on Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Indigenous Americas past and present.

The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples, cultures, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions, publications, and public programs, informed by interdisciplinary approaches and the perspectives of the cultures represented.

Also featured is the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics, culture and social action.

The Fowler provides exciting, informative and thought-provoking exhibitions and events for the UCLA community and the people of greater Los Angeles and beyond.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Curator of Native American Cultures at the Fowler Museum at UCLA, the NAGPRA Program and Archaeological Collections Manager will facilitate the daily implementation of NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act) and CalNAGPRA, following the UC Policy on Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation.

Manages archaeological collections and related storage facilities, and leads curatorial projects in compliance with UC Policy, state, and federal regulations.

Supervises a Repatriation team including one or two Repatriation Assistants, student employees, and interns. Fosters community participation among underrepresented Native American tribes and communities by promoting consultation regarding collections at the Fowler Museum.

May also attend cultural and education committees out in the communities and within the University of California. Completes work in accordance with best museum ethics and practices.

Accepts projects from the Repatriation Coordinator and Curator of Native American Cultures as prioritized with project balance.

Discusses project goals and resource allocation with supervisor regularly. In absence of supervisor, accepts counsel and direction on museum practices from Chief Curator, Director of Collections and Registration, Deputy Director, and Museum Director.

Salary & Compensation

UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of California archaeology experience. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of museum related regulations, especially the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of California material culture. Demonstrated experience working with indigenous communities. (Required)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly, productively, cooperatively, diplomatically, and respectfully in the professional environment. (Required)
  • Skill in museum object handling. Ability to work with materials (feathers, fur, hair, fibers, natural dyes, etc) that may aggravate allergies (Required)
  • Ability to organize time, set priorities and perform effectively under deadline. (Required)
  • Excellent fine manual skills, patience, and attention to detail. (Required)
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs or more on a regular basis. Ability to organize collections facilities, including moving boxes. (Required)
  • Proficient in the use of MS Word and Excel. Ability to manage accession records in digital forms (Required)
  • Ability to use Adobe Acrobat, PowerPoint, FileMaker Pro, and Paradox. Ability to learn the operation of a 35mm camera and scanner to photograph artifacts and preserve documents.

Skill in creating and maintaining associated databases and inventories. (Preferred)

  • Ability to work efficiently and accurately, and to be responsive to an often challenging production environment; ability to work effectively on many projects simultaneously. (Required)
  • Ability to oversee volunteers and staff on selected work assignments, and in the absence of the supervisor to schedule previously determined work assignments to staff and volunteers. (Required)
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License and the ability to operate a University vehicle in the course of performing the job duties (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

Master's Degree Or higher in anthropology, museum studies, American Indian Studies, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience (Preferred)

Special Conditions for Employment

  • Background Check : Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Live Scan Background Check : A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.
  • Driving Record : The position is subject to the California DMV "Pull Notice System" and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.
  • CANRA : The position is designated as a mandatory reporter under CANRA . The employee must sign the "Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse".
