Certification Details
- Community CNS Requirements
- Have at least three years’ full-time of clinical experience in neonatal nursing in a NICU that is equivalent to a Regional or Community NICU.
- Have current certification in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing from a nationally accredited organization i.e., NCC or the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN);
or certified by AACN as a Neonatal CNS.
- Have evidence of current instructor status by the NRP of the AAP and the AHA.
- Previous Charge Experience
- Will be expected to understand NICU quality metrics, tracking, and interpretation (Focusing on decreasing chronic lung disease, hospital acquired infections, and improving thermoregulation, and healthy work environment.

Unit Specific Information
- The Community CNS shall be responsible for :
- Directing the clinical nursing practice in the NICU;
- Coordinating and assessing critical care education development and clinical competency of the nursing staff in the NICU;
- and ensuring continued competency through educational programs for both the newly hired and experienced nursing staff;
- Consulting with staff on complex neonatal critical care nursing issues;
- Oversight of comprehensive parent and / or primary caretaker education activities; and
- Ensuring implementation of a coordinated and effective discharge planning program.
