General Description :

The San Antonio Food Bank is looking for a dynamic Director of Community Health and Nutrition Education . In this role you will drive the Food Bank's strategic priorities in the key areas of community health and nutrition.

The Director of Community Health and Nutrition Education is responsible for applying a public health lens to the Food Bank's efforts to alleviate food insecurity, helping position the Food Bank as a leader in promoting community health.

This position provides strategic direction for the Food Bank's nutrition education program (CHEF - Culinary Health Education for Families) and our Community Health and Wellness programming, ensuring their long-term strategic growth and development and efficient and effective daily implementation.

These programs include CHEF-Culinary Health Education for Families, Healthcare Partnerships, Food Rx, and SAFB internal Health & Wellness initiative.

Reporting to the Chief Program Officer, this position is highly visible internally and externally and the ideal candidate will bring a variety of attributes, knowledge, and skills, including a strong program management and program operations background, coupled with strategic leadership skills.

This position requires an ability to see the big picture and good attention to detail. A high level of emotional intelligence and the ability to build strong relationships will allow them to easily engage with varied community partners and stakeholders, as well as internal departments of the Food Bank.

This position manages a team of 12 full-time staff members along with interns and volunteers. The Director of Community Health & Nutrition Education has two direct reports.

Essential Functions :

  • Create and operationalize a strategic vision for community health & nutrition education initiatives and direct department and programmatic activities, project implementation and partnership development in alignment with that vision.
  • Lead and motivate a high functioning team : Hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff.
  • Provide an assertive public health perspective that informs and directs Food Bank programming.
  • Lead the development and communication of the Food Bank's nutrition policies; Educate the Food Bank, network partners, and general public on the social determinants of health, the link between hunger and health, and the positive impact of access to nutritious foods on community health.
  • Build community relationships and strategic partnerships with key nutrition and health / healthcare organizations and contribute to the Food Bank's healthcare strategies, including community-wide food insecurity screening and referral initiatives.
  • Collaborate on cross-departmental initiatives to support the implementation of new and existing health and nutrition programming.
  • Develop and manage a network of CHEF partners to ensure program quality and partner engagement.
  • Work with the San Antonio Food Bank Development Department to oversee grants as necessary and prepare progress reports required under all relevant grants and contracts.
  • Develop formal relationships with local universities and colleges and serve as a mentoring site for Dietetic, Nutrition students and students from other fields.
  • Work with Nutrition team and relevant partners to utilize evaluation and other data to strengthen CHEF programming and resources.
  • Maintain, evaluate, and develop relationships with national health organizations consistent with goals set forth in the strategic plan.
  • Serve as the CHEF program expert and represent San Antonio Food Bank at conferences.
  • Maintain strong relations with Feeding America, Feeding Texas, and other entities to improve program reach, impact and nutrition security.
  • Foster a collaborative team that supports other Program initiatives to include Culinary, Food for Today, Tomorrow and Lifetime.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree with major course work in Public Health, Nutrition, Health Education, Public Policy, or a related field; Masters degree preferred.
  • Minimum five-to-eight years of full-time, wage-earning experience in public health, community nutrition, healthcare systems, program planning and management.
  • Minimum of five years supervisory experience of full-time paid staff.
  • Knowledge of federal feeding programs and experience with food distribution programs, or the Feeding America network of food banks preferred, but not required.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Southwest Texas community and the nonprofit sector.
  • Demonstrable experience in community engagement including proven track record in developing and managing high profile partnerships with public, private and community organizations.
  • Strong analytical ability to utilize program data to inform program development; strategic thinker capable of shaping overall business strategy.
  • High level of emotional intelligence, political astuteness, diplomacy and relationship building skills.
  • Demonstrated program management experience, including experience building and expanding programs.
  • Understands and values equity as an organizational operating principle and is committed to continued learning on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated understanding of health policy, and health economics.
  • Demonstration of cultural competence in nutrition and dietetics; Understanding of the importance of cultural diversity in food and nutrition.
  • Knowledge of racial justice, social equity, and systemic racism; sensitivity to issues and concerns of communities of color and other diverse groups.
  • Strength in hiring, recruiting, managing, developing, coaching, and retaining individuals and teams, empowering them to elevate their levels of responsibility, span-of-control, and performance.
  • Experience working with volunteers and families of varying socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, organizational, and communications skills.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple projects with attention to detail and accuracy while adhering to deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage time efficiently and to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word, and advanced Excel skills.
  • Valid Government Issued Drivers License and proof of insurance.

Work Environment

This job is performed in an indoor office environment and occasionally may require attendance at outdoor events. You may be required to drive to different locations with varying conditions.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
