Position Description
Coral Reef Ecology
The Department of Biology at the College of Charleston invites applications for a tenure-track position in Coral Reef Ecology at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2025.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in marine biology or a related field. We seek a candidate specializing in community ecology and symbiosis in coral reef ecosystems, with preference for a candidate that investigates marine invertebrate ecology.
Minimum requirements for consideration include :
- an established record of research productivity in the form of publications in peer reviewed scholarly journals.
- experience mentoring students in research.
- previous teaching experience as the instructor of record or passionate about the possibility of teaching courses such as introductory biology, upper-level ecology lecture and laboratory for majors, upper-level coral reef biology lecture and laboratory for majors, graduate-level courses, and interdisciplinary courses that meld biology and liberal arts disciplines.
- evidence of professional committee service to their current or previous institutions and / or professional organizations.
Preference will be given to candidates who also meet the following criteria :
- an established record of extramural funding.
- experience mentoring graduate students.
- experience publishing with students.
- experience leading students on field-based excursions at remote field sites, field stations, or marine laboratories.
A typical semester load is 9 contact hours; laboratories count as 3 contact hours. The College of Charleston, located in Charleston, SC, is a public liberal arts and sciences institution of 11,000 students, with MS programs in Marine Biology and Environmental Studies, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and research.
Satellite facilities include the 850+ acre Stono Preserve located 18 miles west of Charleston, SC, and the Grice Marine Laboratory which is close to the downtown campus.
There are numerous nearby natural areas including Francis Marion National Forest, protected areas, and barrier islands, and there are ample opportunities to collaborate with researchers at neighboring research institutions including the Citadel, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, NOAA , Medical University of South Carolina, National Institute of Standards and Technology, USC , Clemson Coastal Research and Education Center, and the USDA Vegetable lab.
