DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6, employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2, square mile watershed that extends miles north and west of the City

The Deputy Chief of Staff supports DEP’s mission by ensuring the smooth functioning of the Commissioner’s Office, including coordinating critical agency projects with senior staff and City Hall.

The Deputy Chief of Staff reports to the Chief of Staff and will work closely with agency leadership to fulfill DEP’s strategic goals.

Reporting directly to the Chief of Staff to the Commissioner, the Deputy Chief of Staff :

  • Provides oversight and guidance to projects of strategic importance to the agency, especially those that require cross-functional collaboration;
  • Manages some of the Commissioner’s Office’s relationships including those with the Mayor’s Office of International Affairs, other government delegations, and the Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice;
  • Serves as the primary point of contact within the Commissioner’s Office for a portfolio of bureaus within DEP and tracks follow-up actions requested by the Commissioner;
  • Represents the Commissioner’s Office on special projects related to public affairs and communications;
  • Ensures that the Commissioner is prepared for meetings and events;
  • Works closely with the Commissioner’s Executive Assistant and Travel Liaison to ensure the appropriate management and quality control of the Commissioner’s calendar;
  • Coordinates presentations, sets agendas, and summarizes deliverables for Senior Staff meetings;
  • Advises on and / or prepares the Commissioner’s internal and external communications, both written and spoken;
  • Represents the Chief of Staff or Commissioner as required with staff, other City entities, and the stakeholder community at large;
  • Performs other related duties and functions as required.

As the Commissioner also serves as the Chief Climate Officer for the City of New York, the Deputy Chief of Staff will also be responsible for coordinating closely with the Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice and the Senior Advisor to the Chief Climate Officer to ensure that all priorities are met.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree with at least five years work experience, ideally in government, environmental science, public policy, communications, or other related fields.

Excellent organizational and communication skills, both oral and written-Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies across a diverse community-Excellent attention to detail in all schedule-related matters-Discretion and judgment in handling sensitive information-Experience working directly with a public official or other high-profile principal-Familiarity with New York City government-Ability to write speeches and articles for publication-Ability to effectively analyze quantitative data and synthesize into effective presentations and memos to top management, public groups, and / or other stakeholders-Knowledge and familiarity with relevant software applications including Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and others-Preference for applicants with a Master’s Degree in Public Policy or Business Administration or other related graduate degrees.
