Summary of Position :

Milton Academy seeks a Spanish language and culture educator to teach Grades 7 and 8 students in our Middle School. In addition to outstanding teaching ability, we seek an inquisitive, self-directed, and team-oriented teacher.

This opportunity is to provide coverage for an extended leave, to begin January 2025 through June 2025.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities :

Teaching and Curriculum

  • Deeply committed to teaching 7th and 8th grade students and possesses strong applied knowledge of Middle School educational pedagogy.
  • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish is required.
  • At least two years of experience teaching the Spanish language at the Middle School level and knowledge of the world’s Spanish-speaking cultures are preferred.
  • Participate in the life of the school outside the classroom, faculty meetings, lunch and recess duties, and advising student activities.
  • Create a student-centered learning atmosphere that fosters a positive classroom environment that encourages student participation and discussion.
  • Adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities.
  • Stay informed about the latest developments in world language education, trends, and innovations, and incorporate these into the program.
  • Learn about diversity, equity, and inclusion in education; incorporate related principles when designing curriculum, teaching, and engaging with students.
  • Collaborate with Middle School colleagues to develop inter-departmental and cross-disciplinary projects and initiatives, including potentially collaborating with the world language teachers in the Lower and Upper School divisions on curriculum and instruction.
  • Actively support students, providing mentorship and academic guidance.
  • Assess and evaluate student performance through assignments, projects, and observations.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues regarding academic progress.

Other Middle School Responsibilities

All middle school employees are expected to attend morning assemblies and advisories, faculty and staff meetings, grade-level meetings, departmental meetings, and professional development.

All Middle School employees are expected to be ready to welcome students into our space at 8 : 00 a.m. and, in this role, to remain on campus until 4 : 00 p.m.

A variety of community responsibilities are also an essential component of our program. All middle school employees are responsible for :

  • Weekly lunch supervision
  • Weekly study hall supervision
  • Facilitation of one semester-long activity

Supervision to be received : Supervised by the Middle School Principal

Supervision to be exercised : None

Education / Certification / Licensure

Required : A bachelor’s degree in Spanish, Education, or a related field

Preferred : A master’s degree in Spanish, Education, or a related field

Experience

Preferred :

  • A minimum of two years of proven experience in teaching and creating curriculum in Spanish language and culture instruction.
  • Experience working in an independent boarding / day school.

  • Proficiency in Spanish language and culture curriculum creation and instruction.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituencies.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and related issues.
  • Receptive to supervision and professional development.
  • Desire to be a part of a dynamic educational community.

Physical Abilities

Required :

  • Must be able to work at a computer for up to 8 hours each day in conjunction with OSHA requirements.
  • Must be able to teach in a classroom setting and use relevant instructional technology.
  • Must be able to move around the Milton Academy campus without restriction.
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds.
