Deputy Director of Communications Job Summary :
Sparks Group is looking for a Deputy Director of Communications to join a well-known institution in Washington, DC . This will be hybrid opportunity (3 days onsite, 2 remote).
Deputy Director of Communications Responsibilities :
- Responsible for planning, oversight, production and implementation of communications-related activities, including, but not limited to : website, press, media relations, social media, publications, awards, grant writing, presentations, and multimedia / video.
- Ensures all departments within the company have appropriate access to messaging. Responsible for creation of engaging content for various platforms catering to numerous user groups.
- Develops effective communication strategies and correlated tactics.
- Manages and improves internal communications (memos, newsletters, etc.), as well as external communications flows.
- Drafts content (e.g., press releases) for mass media or website. Researches and writes press releases, and content for the website, infographics, blogs, and newsletters.
- Determines content topics, coordinates with others to obtain information, writes, edits, designs and sends content to internal and external audiences.
- Organizes initiatives and plan events or press conferences.
- Liaises with media and handles requests for interviews, statements etc.
- Collaborates with marketing professionals to produce copy for advertisements or articles.
- Develops and implements a communication strategy that includes media outreach and social media content creation.
- Acquires and maintains a detailed knowledge of company / department policies, principles, and strategies, and keeps up-to-date with relevant developments.
- Supports and evaluates results of communication campaigns with the team.
- Builds and maintains relationships with journalists and key external players.
Deputy Director of Communications Qualifications :
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
- 8+ years of experience in communications, public relations, or media relations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft clear and persuasive messages for diverse audiences.
- Strong editing skills and deep understanding of audience, tone and style.
- Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, media relations, and crisis communication.
- Proficiency in digital communication tools and platforms, including social media management, content management systems, and email marketing software.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends, as needed.
