Job Description

Seeking a motivated, organized, and experienced Project Manager to help coordinate several research and educational projects over the next year.

Two projects in particular will take most of the Project Managers time : continuing to develop the ESSA Scholars network and the NATURA network of networks established in Fall .

The Project Manager will work collaboratively with multiple partners both inside and outside the academy.

About ESSA Scholars

The ESSA graduate training network at ASU revolutionizes the way we train graduate scholars for careers in

the Anthropocene. Challenges of this new age require systems thinking and convergence across disciplines in collaborative team science.

ESSA scholars recognize diverse ways of knowing and the societal and cultural underpinnings of Anthropocene challenges that enable effective communication beyond the academy and a focus on solutions that are just and equitable.

ESSA scholars design their own curricula to incorporate these elements and engage together in problem-based learning across diverse contexts.

About NATURA

Nature-based Solutions for Urban Resilience in the Anthropocene (NATURA) is a project designed to exchange knowledge, share data, and enhance communication among research disciplines around the world and across the research-practice divide to advance urban resilience in face of growing threats of extreme weather events.

This project links over 30 networks in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, North and Latin America to apply nature-based solutions (NBS) in a wide range of social, ecological, and technological contexts.

This position would work with the current project manager of NATURA to ensure all the needs of NATURA, ESSA, and the Urban and Stream Ecology Lab are met.

The Project Manager will work under the project director for both the ESSA Scholars and NATURA networks, and will work closely and collaboratively with team members in these and other projects, including faculty, graduate program directors, university administrators, executive and coordinating teams, network researchers and practitioners, postdoctoral scholars, and students.

The Project Manager will organize and oversee progress on project tasks, conduct literature reviews, coordinate communication and integration among the networks, lead the development of frameworks for evaluating progress toward goals, and coordinate efforts by all parties to ensure timely delivery of project outcomes in accordance with visions and goals.

Essential Duties

Monitor budgets and ensure spending stays on track with project timelines.

Develop and maintain a recruitment plan for ESSA Scholars to attract students to the network.

Direct the recruitment of early-career scholars, practitioners, and students for ESSA network opportunities.

Work collaboratively with Project Director, partner organizations, and other related individuals to define and identify all required project infrastructure, space, equipment, and technology to ensure timely availability for successful launch and ongoing project operations.

Build, develop, and maintain relationships vital to project success.

Develop partner relationships with external practitioners to identify and establish training opportunities for ESSA or NATURA Scholars.

Establishes and continually monitors / manages project expectations with team; assigns tasks and identifies issues for resolution to ensure optimal team effectiveness.

Prepares and maintains all project status reports and schedules; tracks milestones / deliverables; re-sets expectations as needed in consideration of project progress / outcomes.

Responds to all inquiries regarding project status; prepares and responds to all regulatory reporting / filings to ensure compliance Manages, coaches, and supervises all project team members both internal and contracted to ensure optimal outcomes;

builds, develops, and maintains relationships vital to project success.

Works collaboratively with stakeholders, leadership, and other related staff to define and identify all required project infrastructure including, but not limited to : space, build / reconfiguration of facilities, equipment, technology and infrastructure to ensure timely availability for successful launch and ongoing project operations.

Prepares all post-project reports, budget allocations and summaries / filings to ensure timely dissemination of information to all interested parties.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and 5 years related experience; 1 of which are in project management, or any equivalent combination of experience and / or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in science or related field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three years of project management experience;

OR, Seven years of project management experience; OR, Any equivalent experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

Desired :

  • Evidence of a Master's degree in a relevant social science, earth / life science, or engineering field
  • Experience on managing interdisciplinary projects
  • Demonstrated knowledge of processes to conduct needs assessments
  • Experience in writing and disseminating results through presentations, reports, and publications
  • Knowledge of principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Experience in developing strategies and technical specifications for projects
  • Experience in planning, budgeting, implementing, and evaluating projects
  • Experience in clarifying roles and responsibilities to ensure understanding of expectations
  • Experience in working with practitioners or stakeholders outside the academy; building and maintaining stakeholder relationships
  • Demonstrated knowledge of facilitation of team science or other collaborative activities
  • Evidence of effective communication skills
  • Experience in basic website development and maintenance

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse;

required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.

  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to : computer workstation / laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer / technology peripherals.
  • This position receives regular review of objectives by department administrator.
