Job Summary

The faculty of the Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a 9-month, , tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin August 16, .

Candidates must demonstrate scholarly expertise in the area(s) of policing, and an earned PhD in criminology, criminal justice, or a closely related discipline sociology, political science, psychology, public administration) by the time of appointment.

Preference will be given to candidates whose work focuses on building the scientific evidence base for policing, and a demonstrated record of building relationships with police practitioners for the purpose of evaluating and implementing better processes and outcomes.

Our Department boasts a diverse and collaborative team of 21 faculty members. Our faculty maintains strong local, national, and international ties with policing agencies, and has decades of experience in collaborative research and practice with our police agency partners.

We are proud to have faculty involved in the Excellence in Policing and Public Safety (EPPS) program, a multi-disciplinary effort in collaboration with the School of Law.

The EPPS program aims to improve public safety outcomes through advancing evidence-based practices in policing through training, research, and community partnerships.

The role encompasses three primary responsibilities : research, teaching, and service. The selected candidate will teach two courses each semester.

An additional requirement is mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students through independent study projects and participation in committees.

The candidate is expected to organize an active research agenda centered on policing, generating high-caliber grant proposals and high-quality peer-reviewed publications.

Faculty members are also responsible for contributing to the growth and well-being of the Department, College, and University.

This includes service to the professional community and engagement with the broader community. Research : We require a demonstrated record or proven potential for high-quality research that results in scientific, peer-reviewed publication.

Evidence of collaborative research engagement with policing agencies is preferred. Preferred Qualifications The preferred candidate would have a strong focus on practice-relevant research, and the capability to build and maintain professional relationships with policing executives and other relevant stakeholders, as well as conduct on-site visits with police agencies.

Preference for candidates who have a record of engaging in formal, national organizations aimed at bridging the practitioner and academic worlds National Institute of Justice (NIJ) LEADS program, or the American Society of Evidence-Based Policing (ASEBP)).

Candidates who have held, or closely observed, command-level policing positions also have preference. Applicants should have a commendable teaching record at the university (both undergraduate and graduate preferred) as well as in practitioner settings.

While a diverse set of policing-focused research agendas will be considered, the preferred candidate will have demonstrated consistent excellence in research activity as evidenced by significant grant activity and publications in nationally recognized peer-reviewed journals.

The preferred candidate would have the ability to assist our faculty in teaching advanced statistical and research design courses.
