Details :

Position Type : Full-time

Casel oad : K-8th; itinerant; 20 students

Pay range : $40+ / hr; based on experience

Responsibilities :

  • Provide comprehensive orientation and mobility assessments for students with visual impairments or blindness.
  • Develop and implement individualized mobility plans tailored to each students needs and abilities.
  • Teach students essential mobility skills, including cane techniques, spatial awareness, route planning, and environmental navigation.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to integrate mobility instruction into the students educational program.
  • Conduct regular progress evaluations and adjust instruction plans as needed to ensure student success.
  • Advocate for accessibility and accommodations to promote inclusivity within the school environment.
  • Stay informed about the latest developments in orientation and mobility techniques, assistive technology, and educational resources.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelors degree in Orientation and Mobility or a related field (Masters degree preferred).
  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or eligibility for certification.
  • Experience working with individuals with visual impairments or blindness in an educational setting.
  • Strong knowledge of orientation and mobility techniques, including proficiency in teaching cane skills and spatial concepts.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Dedication to promoting independence, confidence, and self-advocacy in students with visual impairments or blindness.
  • Flexibility, patience, and creativity in adapting instruction to meet the unique needs of each student.
