The Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, families and staff to assist them in their task of adjusting to spiritual and emotional issues.

These services are accompanied through visitation, a ministry of hospitality, crisis intervention, consultation on ethical issues, and on call coverage as requested.

Integrates theological education and practice in caring for patients, families, and staff of all faiths / cultures in the medical setting.

Essential Duties :

  • Provides spiritual support and counseling to patients, family members / significant others and staff members. The Chaplain interacts daily with the staff and other members of numerous interdisciplinary teams to formulate and evaluate patient care needs.
  • Completes clinical documentation in the patient's medical record.
  • Serves on Committees and interdisciplinary teams as required by hospital policies and procedures and as requested by leadership.
  • Conducts in-service training for staff with regard to providing spiritual support.
  • Conducts religious services for patients as requested and participates in various professional associations for personal and professional growth with the goal of promoting spiritual wellbeing for our patients by building community clergy connections and relationships.
  • Coordinates, trains, evaluates and oversees volunteer chaplains and / or a team of interfaith community spiritual care volunteers as needed.
  • May form a team from local community interfaith Clergy to support Spiritual Care for all patients.
  • Provides and coordinate faith based support for various faith traditions throughout the year. (i.e Ash Wednesday, Nurse's Week, blessing for medical center events or other celebrations, services, memorials outside of normal business hours.)
  • Will be responsible for managing, coordinating and planning spiritual events throughout the Organization and / or participating community spiritual based events.
  • May need to be available on a 24-hour basis (as determined appropriate by leadership)
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • Req Master's degree Degree in divinity, theology or related field from an accredited Seminary, College or University.
  • Req 1 year Experience providing spiritual care in a healthcare setting or pastoral care ministry.
  • Req Ability to minister in a cross-cultural setting.
  • Req Ability to participate in pastoral / spiritual care-giving to persons of any faith group.
  • Req Sensitivity to diverse religious, spiritual, and cultural practices and values.
  • Req Ability to respond to people of diverse backgrounds in a caring and compassionate way, enabling them to make decisions, accept loss, and cope with crisis situations.
  • Req Ability to function effectively in crisis or under stress.
  • Req Capable of theological and spiritual reflection with persons.
  • Req Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff members, managers, volunteers, administrators, patients, and families.
  • Req Ability to communicate spiritual and / or religious needs of patients to the multi-disciplinary health care team and to other chaplains / spiritual care-givers.
  • Req Ability to work / cooperate with community religious leaders and their gifts to the hospital spiritual care and ministry.

Required Certifications :

Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date.

Required within LA City only)

  • Pref Certification - Job Relevant Minimum four (4) units of Clinical Pastoral Education completed from an accredited program.
  • Pref Certification - Job Relevant Ordained, licensed or endorsed for ministry by their prospective recognized faith community.
  • Pref Certification - Job Relevant Board Certified Chaplain with APC, NACC or NAJC.

The annual base salary range for this position is $60,320.00 - $94,020.00.
