Program Summary :

YOLA provides incomparable and equitable access to a high-quality and intensive music education for more than 1,700 elementary, middle, and high school students from diverse and vibrant communities across Los Angeles at five unique sites.

In providing this access, YOLA supports young people to leverage their learned skills and artistic identities and create transformational change for themselves and their communities.

In 2021, the Beckmen YOLA Center was opened as a purpose-built space for program-wide YOLA activities as well as a cultural arts resource in the city of Inglewood.

Position Summary :

The YOLA at Torres Program Manager is a leadership position for YOLA’s East LA hub housed at the Esteban E. Torres High School and focused on creating continued sustainability of the site’s musical, programmatic and operational health.

The YOLA at Torres program serves a population of elementary through high school students ranging from beginner to advanced musicians.

As such, the Program Manager leads a core administrative team as well as manages approximately 17 Teaching Artists for day-to-day programming.

As a leader of a YOLA site, the YOLA at Torres Program Manager maintains and nurtures a healthy community among students, parents and neighboring schools as well as demonstrates a deep understanding and commitment to community programming, core concepts of youth development and unwavering support of fostering community-responsiveness and music’s ability to advance these ideas.

The Program Manager also serves as the lead advocate and representative of YOLA for the East LA community and is charged with actively engaging with and seeking out resources that will support the operational and programmatic health of the site.

As part of the Learning department for the LA Phil, this role also supports large, cross-site YOLA initiatives and collaboration with other YOLA sites.

The Program Manager also serves in a key role for managing a positive partner relationship with all partners and community stakeholders connected to Torres.

SCOPE OF WORK : Management

Management

  • Oversee all program and artistic initiatives for the site in collaboration with YOLA central team of the LA Phil Learning department
  • Oversee and manage a team of part-time administrative staff members and teaching artists
  • Lead Teaching Artists in facilitating curriculum initiatives, observe music instruction, and provide regular formal and informal feedback
  • Responsible for culture-setting of the site and maintenance of a strong team dynamic
  • Oversee all hiring and onboarding for prospective administrative staff and teaching artists
  • Oversee all recruitment efforts for the site and serve as the primary representative to internal and external stakeholders
  • Design support structures for program parents and families, including workshops and community social events - in collaboration with site staff and other YOLA stakeholders

Operations

  • Oversee and implement program schedules, working in collaboration with all key stakeholders and YOLA program-wide team
  • Ensure that program operations are in alignment with program curriculum delivery
  • Ensure all proper documentation, data-collection and other program operations are maintained and followed
  • Work with lead partners to ensure that all proper facilities protocols are followed as well as compliance with all emergency protocols

Education / Artistic :

  • In collaboration with the YOLA Artistic Administrator, oversee the quality of artistic outcomes for the site and be a key lead on implementing the necessary plans, strategy and logistics for executing said outcomes
  • Proactively and actively monitor quality of artistic health of the site, inclusive of creating proactive strategies for sustaining or adjusting any programming as necessary
  • Oversee program evaluation, both artistically and organize the administrative team to keep strong data management / meet all outlined benchmarks for curriculum
  • In collaboration with the YOLA central team and teaching artists, ensure that all curriculum measures are followed and implemented at the site

Partnership :

  • Oversee and lead in collaboration with key stakeholders any necessary scheduling and program coordination
  • Manage and facilitate direct and partner provided wrap-around’ support services (including academic support and social services)
  • Maintain frequent, responsive and healthy communication with lead partner
  • Understand, uphold and adhere to the agreements outlined in any MOUs or other partner agreements
  • Other duties and projects as assigned

Minimum Requirements

Position Requirements :

  • An understanding of youth development philosophy, diverse music education pedagogies (e.g., Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze), the culture of youth orchestras, community music schools, and after school music programs
  • Demonstrated experience working with music teachers and students across a diverse range of backgrounds and socioeconomic status
  • Experience working in community settings with a track record of achieving shared goals and successful program execution with multiple stakeholders and agendas
  • Experience in collaborative program design and development, coupled with a successful track record of sustainable implementation and execution of large-scale projects
  • Strong music knowledge, particularly instrumental, with broad orchestral training and experience preferred
  • Ability to work well on a team and manage several priorities, accomplishing and planning out systemic approaches to evolving environments
  • Strong computer skills (business professional level), and excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of state and / or national music learning standards
  • Experience working within an orchestra or similar not-for-profit arts organization preferred
  • Local travel, as well as evening and weekend availability
  • Knowledge of Los Angeles County and surrounding K-12 schools preferred
  • Spanish language proficiency strongly preferred
  • Dedication and commitment to engage in and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the staff, program stakeholders, vendors, and through interactions with the surrounding community

Position Expectations :

  • Be an active and participatory member of the YOLA National team and engage with all events for the YOLA National Festival.
  • Attend meetings related to events and projects you are tasked with and actively communicating conflicts and preparing for any meetings that cannot be attended
  • Complete various tasks within established time frames.
  • Ability to work with multiple priorities that may need swift reorganization.
  • Strong independent work and proactively identify and assess effective methods of work operation.
  • Excellent communication skills, with attention to detail, a strong sense of empathy and a proactive nature.
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive situations with excellent judgment and discretion.
  • Maintain professionalism in all instances and embrace serving as a representative of the festival, the YOLA program and the LA Phil in this role.
  • Interact with stakeholders of the YOLA community, including but not limited to administrators, partners, teaching artists, alumni, parents, and young musicians.
