JOB SUMMARY
RESPONSIBILITIES :
- The Pharmacy Technician I is highly proficient in the duties of an inpatient technician, with developed expertise in one (1) specialty area, and the ability to rotate to additional areas.
- Responsible for on-the-job training and mentorship of new team members, utilizing job specific orientation and curriculum based training.
- Partners with the Senior Pharmacy Technician in assigned area to ensure Standard Operating Procedures are followed, and skills checklists represent the most current processes.
II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS :
- Essential : standing, walking, stooping / bending, finger dexterity, seeing, hearing, speaking; lifting usual weight up to 40 pounds for 5 feet, pushing / pulling up to 50 pounds for 200 feet, carrying up to 40 pounds for 200 feet.
- Frequent : climbing stairs, walking on uneven ground, reaching above / at / below shoulder, repetitive arm / hand motions, static gripping of an object for prolonged period, frequent gripping of an object.
- Occasional : sitting, kneeling, crawling, squatting, twisting body.
- Operates various office / pharmaceutical equipment such as typewriter, computer, copier, telephones, calculator, cash register, dispensing machines, drug packaging machine, TPN mixing machine, pneumatic tube system, fax machine, etc.
III. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS :
- Not substantially subjected to adverse environmental conditions.
- Some exposure to cold temperature from freezer.
- Exposure to noise / vibration from air conditioner, and office / pharmacy equipment.
- Exposure to body fluids, chemicals, some contact with patients with communicable diseases.
- May be required to work with hazardous drugs, depending upon area of assignment.
- Work environment is fast paced, congested and may be stressful.
IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
A. EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE :
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certificate of completion from a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) recognized or American Society of Health-System Pharmacy (ASHP) accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program;
or three (3) months of work experience as a Pharmacy Technician may be substituted for the education requirement.
Current PTCB certification. If not certified upon hire, must obtain within six (6) months of entrance into the position.
B. EXPERIENCE :
In addition to the education requirement, one (1) year experience as a Pharmacy Technician at The Queen’s Medical Center (QMC);
or two (2) years experience as a Pharmacy Technician in a hospital setting outside of QMC.
- Experience to demonstrate ability and skill in conducting training.
- Experience to demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficiency in computers and word processing applications, i.e. Microsoft Word.
