BASIC FUNCTION :

Under general supervision of the Assistant Vice President Facilities & Campus Services, the Director will oversee the comprehensive grounds, landscape and hardscape, irrigation, recycling and rubbish disposal programs, and manage the budget and related business affairs.

The Director takes great pride in the overall aesthetic of the beautiful campus physical plant. The Director supervises a team of grounds and landscape staff and serves on the Assistant Vice President’s Facilities and Campus Services leadership team along with the Director of Hospitality and Director of Maintenance.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

Plan, develop, and submit capital budget items for landscape and hardscape maintenance, rubbish collection.

Develop a Grounds team that is knowledgeable, productive, and takes great pride in the aesthetic of the College’s campus.

Supervision of employees to include daily monitoring of performance, task assignment, assistance in planning, organizing, and effectively carrying out all assigned work.

Develop and adjust grounds work plans and schedules in coordination with the College’s physical plant use and regular events and programs.

Supervises a team of college employed groundskeepers.

Contact outside vendors and contractors, award and supervise work.

Coordinate and supervise physical plant work to include maintenance of streets, parking lots, events house, President’s house, etc.

Procure and approve for payment of goods and services.

Maintain a record of all projects completed and in progress.

Track and analyze all data concerning assigned projects.

Interview, hire, and train grounds staff and summer help.

Conduct annual employee evaluations.

Contact the City of Claremont for recycling and refuse collection.

Provide uniforms for employees.

Responsible for overall health and maintenance of all landscaped and hardscaped areas.

Schedule and coordinate storm drainage service (2x a year) and as applicable per maintenance agreement.

Coordinate roof repairs or replacements, cleaning of gutters and storm drains.

Coordinate agricultural and structural pest control management.

Check monthly water meter readings as it pertains to irrigation.

Provide line markings for athletic fields.

Plant trees, shrubs, flowers and turf as needed.

Coordinate equipment and vehicle maintenance.

Review, manage, and maintain irrigation across campus.

Keep inventory of trees.

Advise on tree status after strong winds and storms.

Keep inventory of equipment, tools, and supplies.

Assist in planning, supervising, and executing the maintenance of athletic fields.

Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment.

Review and maintain spray permit annually.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :

EDUCATION : A four-year college degree in the fields of horticulture, environmental science, landscape architecture, or related professions and two years of experience in a management or administrative capacity or a combination of education and experience judged to be the equivalent of a four-year degree and two years of experience.

EXPERIENCE : Preferred experience in areas related to horticulture, nursery work, environmental science, arborist, tree trimming and pruning, irrigation systems, and landscape work.

LICENSES : Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and driving record acceptable to the College's automobile insurance carrier.

Must obtain and QAL pesticide license and maintain CEU’s (continued education units) for bi-annual renewal. Certified Arborist desired, not required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES :

General business practices and procedures.

Basic working knowledge of general office practice and procedures.

Computer application : Windows 11, Excel.

Basic knowledge of plants identification, irrigation system, pest control, turf management.

Basic knowledge of landscape equipment and minor repairs.

Basic knowledge on pruning trees, shrubs, etc.

Adapt to a changing environment.

Compose grammatically and punctually correct written communications.

Delegate effectively.

Demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making abilities.

Demonstrate a high level of initiative at all times.

Effectively evaluate the performance of subordinates and develop improvement plans.

Familiar with WeatherTrak operation, ET, NOAA

Have an understanding of irrigation scheduling, operations, and repair.

Work weekends, holidays, and evenings as needed.

REQUIRED HOURS : The regular hours for this full-time position are 8 : 00 a.m. to 5 : 00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of the College or department.

Some evening and / or weekend and holiday work may be required to support campus programs and activities. Occasional requirements to work outside of standard business hours may be required to ensure timely responsiveness to our college community.

C LASSIFICATION AND STATUS :

This is a full-time exempt level, benefits-eligible, twelve-month, year-round position.

APPROXIMATE ANNUAL SALARY RANGE :

$105,000 - $115,000 PER YEAR

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Typical physical tasks in a standard office setting involve reaching, handling, grasping, speaking, listening, observing, and repetitive movements.

Occasionally, may lift, push, or pull items weighing up to 20 lbs.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY : Will supervise non-exempt employees.

GROOMING AND APPEARANCE : The Claremont Colleges seek to maintain a neat and professional image at all times.

BACKGROUND CHECK : The successful candidate will be required to undergo a full consumer background check. Certain positions will require the successful completion of a post-offer physical agility test.
