Executive Director of Expanded Learning and Opportunities (SY24-25)

REPORTS TO : Chief Family Advancement Officer

POSITION OVERVIEW :

The Executive Director of Expanded Learning and Opportunities resides in the Office of Expanded Learning Opportunities within the Office of Family and Community Advancement of the Boston Public Schools, reporting to the Chief Family Advancement Officer.

The Executive Director is responsible for supporting and advancing the district’s vision, mission, and goals through building capacity for effective engagement with families and student participation in expanded learning opportunities.

This includes overseeing programs such as Homeschooling, Before and After School Programs, February and April Vacation Acceleration Academies, 21st Century Programs, and 5th Quarter Summer Programs.

The Executive Director oversees personnel, budget, curriculum, program development, and operations for initiatives, activities, and services related to expanded learning opportunities.

The role involves developing district policies that measure and support student outcomes and contribute to advancing the mission of the Boston Public Schools.

The position emphasizes creating meaningful opportunities for authentic input and feedback from students and families participating in these programs, utilizing data to inform decision-making and enhance programmatic experiences.

The Executive Director will also be responsible for demonstrating previous school leadership expertise with evidence of positively impacting student academic and other measurable outcomes.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Serve as a member of the Office of Family and Community Advancement, leading the district priority on engaging students and families in expanded learning opportunities.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive strategy for all Expanded Learning Opportunities and initiatives in alignment with district priorities.
  • Establish and monitor quantitative and qualitative engagement goals for the Expanded Learning Opportunities programs.
  • Collaborate across departments to support school improvement initiatives that close achievement gaps.
  • Identify high-quality instructional curriculum and assessment for expanded learning experiences.
  • Oversee the budget for all ELO-related responsibilities, including analysis of spending and revenue opportunities.
  • Provide leadership and support to school leaders in increasing 21st Century learning opportunities.
  • Provide professional learning opportunities and technical assistance on ELO to school leaders and staff.
  • Review, develop, and recommend ELO district policies and procedures in collaboration with executive leadership.
  • Evaluate and invest in improvement opportunities for direct reports.

Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Family Advancement Officer.

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED :

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Business, or related field.
  • 5 years as a school leader or in a similar professional leadership setting.
  • 3 to 5 years of proven leadership experience in educational program management.
  • Strong understanding of curriculum development and data management.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic planning, budget management, grant writing, and program evaluation.
  • Must have a cultural and linguistic growth mindset and the ability to develop strong professional relationships.
  • Strong community relationships and ability to develop partnerships across diverse constituencies.
  • Ability to think critically, solve problems, and adapt to changing educational landscapes.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States.
  • A commitment to understanding the needs of urban school systems for continuous improvement.
  • A deeply held belief in the mission of public education.

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED :

  • Experience as a school leader with curriculum development and assessment.
  • Bilingual or multilingual.
  • 5+ years in Expanded Learning Opportunity and / or partnership management.
  • Familiarity with urban districts, Boston, and Boston Public Schools.
