Position Summary / Purpose of Position : The Executive Director for Development (EDOD) is an essential administrator in the Division of University Relations and a strategic leader in the planning and execution of annual fundraising goals and university-wide fundraising campaigns.

The EDOD directs a portfolio of fundraising programs within the Development organization in several Schools & Colleges :

  • College of Agricultural & Natural Resources
  • School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation
  • College of Arts & Humanities
  • College of Behavioral & Social Sciences
  • College of Education
  • College of Information
  • Philip Merrill College of Journalism
  • School of Public Health
  • School of Public Policy

The EDOD will work closely with deans and other campus leadership, developing fundraising priorities and strategies for their respective units.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Development of Schools, Colleges & Units, the EDOD will assist in the development of ambitious fundraising goals and establish performance metrics for units and staff under supervision, driving efficiency and maximizing philanthropic support.

The EDOD will utilize data analytics tools to identify trends and formulate strategies to drive the gift officer metrics framework and must understand how to utilize data to coach, provide support, and drive results.

Additionally, the EDOD will work with development officers and campus partners to create and execute donor strategies; provide training and mentorship to fundraising staff;

and maintain their own portfolio of high-level prospects. The Executive Director promotes and facilitates integration, collaboration, and teamwork between all departments throughout the Division as appropriate, to maximize engagement and philanthropic opportunity in support of the university’s strategic mission.

An understanding of development best practices, trends, and emerging strategies is crucial to support the growth of philanthropy at the University.

As a strategic leader, the Executive Director serves on the development leadership team and acts as a representative of University Relations throughout the university.

This role anticipates travel approximately 20% of the time and requires the availability to work evenings and weekends as necessary for events, donor meetings, and programs.

Minimum Qualifications :

Education : Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience : Candidates must have at least 11 years of demonstrated fundraising or related experience. They must also have experience managing multiple assignments and staff, as well as possess some supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Candidates must have strong interpersonal, management and organizational skills and excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Candidates must have the ability to work collaboratively among various levels of staff within the university, particularly the development, donor relations, and communications staff as well as University academic leadership.
  • Ability to earn the confidence of a wide range of internal and external constituents.
  • Effective leadership capabilities; able to mentor and coach team in area of responsibility and the achievement of organization goals.
  • Ability to think strategically and achieve organizational goals relating to position and to operationalize strategic goals into action plans.
  • Ability to provide oversight of compliance and regulatory requirements pertaining to position and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage intense stress with multiple competing priorities while maintaining a positive attitude and affect.
  • Ability to find humor in day-to-day challenges while being focused on solutions.
  • Ability to manage details and complexity, to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously and to work under pressure.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, sound judgment, and problem-solving techniques in the decision-making process. Must be able to speak effectively in a public or group setting.

Preferences :

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Campaign and higher education experience preferred.
  • Experience in identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts donors preferred.

No Visa sponsorship is offered for this position. Salary Range is : $208,756 $256,000. This position allows for a combination of in-person and telework days as approved by the supervisor.

Physical Demands : This is primarily a sedentary position involving extensive use of desktop computers. The position does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings and programs.

Travel 20% of the time and availability to work evenings and weekends as necessary for university events and activities and management of the regional major gifts program.
