Job Description

The Visual and Studio Arts program at Sarah Lawrence College announces a one year, half-time, guest appointment with possible renewal for an additional two years in Painting, beginning Fall 2025. This guest faculty will teach one 5-credit studio course each semester with a maximum of fifteen students, and one 2-credit “concept class” during the fall semester. The two credit course should be addressing Artistic Research (a class on how an artist collects information towards their work and prepares for larger projects through research; how to think / work through an artistic block by searching for personal areas of interest; how to generate ideas) or Drawing The Body, Drawing the Head (a class that focuses on close looking, drawing from observation, proportions, anatomy. Students are interested in incorporating the human figure / head into their paintings / drawings and need this knowledge.)

The courses will take place on Mondays and Thursdays.

In addition to regular coursework, students enrolled in the 5-credit course will complete a significant independent project referred to as a ‘Conference Project’, a hallmark of Sarah Lawrence’s educational system. Candidates should have at least three years of teaching experience with undergraduates and should be able to teach both beginning and intermediate painting classes in oil and acrylic through a broad range of approaches, from observational to conceptual. Students are liberal arts candidates and may have varying degrees of studio experience.

The committee welcomes artists who are passionate, inventive, and rigorous in the field of Painting.

Compensation listed for this position is for a half-time guest faculty position and will be contingent on teaching experience.

• References – Additionally, include the names and contact information for three references. Letters of reference are not required at this time.
