Description

Under general supervision, to administer anesthesia to patients undergoing operations, deliveries, and other therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics :

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) classification is distinguished from the Clinical Nurse III classification in that the Clinical Nurse III is responsible for direct patient care and initiates and performs nursing interventions utilizing current clinical knowledge under general supervision, whereas the CRNA is an advanced practice nurse that possesses a higher level of education and applies independent judgment in the administration of anesthesia to patients undergoing operations, deliveries, and other therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

The CRNA classification is distinguished from the Nurse Practitioner (NP) classification in that the NP provides primary care and urgent care services to patients, performs physical examinations to evaluate patients' health, and diagnoses illnesses, whereas the CRNA evaluates pre-operative conditions and administers anesthetics to manage patients undergoing surgical procedures.

The CRNA classification is distinguished from the Director of Advanced Practice classification in that the Director of Advanced Practice provides leadership, direction, and supervision to Nurse Practitioners (NP), Physician Assistants (PA), Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Certified Nurse Midwives with limited patient care responsibilities, whereas the CRNA has direct patient care and works independently with limited supervisory responsibilities.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center - 731 bed tertiary level acute care hospital provides the highest level of adult and pediatric emergency medical and trauma services, a regional high risk Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, an ACS-verified Burn Trauma Center, a Primary Stroke Center, a CARF-accredited Rehabilitation Center, emergency and acute inpatient psychiatric services, as well as a range of other specialized services - in some cases the only such treatment in the region.

O'Connor Hospital -358 bed acute care facility offering a full range of inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and specialty programs to more than 1 million residents of San Jose.

O'Connor Hospital was founded in 1889 as one of the first hospitals in Santa Clara County.

St. Louise Regional Hospital - 93 bed acute care facility, affectionately known as South County's community hospital, is a Designated Primary Stroke Center, and is the only acute care hospital in the area.

Located in Gilroy, St. Louise is one of the largest employers in the community.

Typical Tasks

The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.

Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  • Administers various types of anesthesia by inhalation, intravenous injection, epidural, spinal, and block methods;
  • Initiates and compiles or reviews the documentation of a thorough pre-anesthesia evaluation according to policies and standards;
  • Develops patient care regimens based on evaluations;
  • Communicates with the assigned anesthesia faculty member, as needed, before, during and after surgery;
  • Informs the surgeon and anesthesiologist of the patient's condition;
  • Examines patients and evaluates pre-operative condition to determine degree of surgical risk and type of anesthesia or sedation to administer;
  • Keeps current, accurate, and complete records of procedures performed and patients' conditions according to established standards;
  • accurately charts procedures;
  • Administers chosen anesthetic consistent with safety of patients, requirements of surgeons, possible post-operative complications, patients' history, and conditions;
  • constantly evaluates and monitors patients' responses and treatments of responses;
  • Manages the organization and use of equipment and supplies in a professional, effective, safe, and appropriately cost-effective manner;
  • Orders, assembles, and sterilizes all special equipment used in connection with administration of anesthetics for special types of surgery;
  • Orders all drugs used in anesthetics procedures; checks narcotics used in surgery by surgical staff;
  • Ensures an anesthesia care support environment that is functionally safe and clean;
  • Ensures that unsafe equipment is removed from service and reports any malfunction of equipment and unsafe conditions according to departmental policies and procedures;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW), as required*;
  • Performs other related duties, as required.

Employment Standards

Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks, plus the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities;

Training and Experience Note : The required knowledge and abilities are attained through possession of a Master's or Doctoral degree

Graduation from a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) program

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain the following licenses and / or certifications in good standing upon appointment and for the duration of employment in this classification :

  • California Registered Nurse (RN) license;
  • Certification as a Nurse Anesthetist by the California State Board of Registered Nursing;
  • Basic Life Saving Certification (BLS);
  • Advance Cardiovascular Life Saving Certification (ACLS);
  • Certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists;
  • Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver's license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization;
  • As a condition of employment, pursuant to California Government Code Sections 3100-3109 and Local Ordinance, all County of Santa Clara employees are designated Disaster Service Workers (DSWs), including extra help.

A DSW is required to complete all assigned DSW-related training, and in the event of an emergency, return to work as ordered.

Knowledge of :

  • Surgical nursing principles and procedures, including various methods of administering anesthesia, including Pediatric and Obstetric Anesthesia;
  • Standard operating room methods, equipment, and procedures; anesthesia equipment, instruments, and drugs used in various types of surgery and resuscitation techniques;
  • Regulatory requirements and legal consequences of anesthesia care;
  • Awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and unit functions;
  • Laws and regulations pertaining to practice of medicine and nursing;
  • Interpersonal relations, customer service, adaptability, and change management;
  • Common computer systems and applications;
  • English usage, style, grammar, punctuation, and spelling;
  • Current trends and concepts in nursing fundamentals of medicine.

Ability to :

  • Exercise professional prerogatives based on sound clinical judgment;
  • Recognize limitations and seek appropriate consultations;
  • Recognize and evaluate situations that call for immediate attention of a physician;
  • Detect unfavorable patient reactions and apply prompt remedial measures;
  • Provide pre-operative and post-operative anesthesia care;
  • Read and understand safety information and other safety communications;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, the public, and representatives of other agencies;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures;
