About the Position : Description

Description

The City of Roanoke is seeking for a highly motivated, hard worker to join our Fleet team and help keep our vehicles running smoothly! As part of our Fleet Division, you’ll service and maintain a wide range of automotive and light / heavy construction equipment.

Plus, you’ll get hands-on experience operating essential automotive equipment like wreckers, tankers, and field service units.

What You’ll Be Doing :

  • Grease and lubricate motorized vehicles, from cars to heavy construction machinery
  • Change oil and service batteries to keep equipment in top shape
  • Repair and mount tires for a variety of vehicles
  • Wash, polish, and maintain motor equipment for peak performance

Qualifications :

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience or training in automotive / construction equipment maintenance, tire repair, or wrecker operation
  • CDL with appropriate endorsements within 6 months of employment
  • ASE certification within 2.5 years of employment

Examples of Duties

What You’ll Do :

  • Operate essential equipment : Street sweepers, dump trucks, riding / push mowers, forklifts, chippers, and even ice resurfacing machines.
  • Tackle maintenance tasks : Repair chairs, tables, and light equipment; perform concrete work; repair storm drains.
  • Handle general labor : Filter replacement, sewer line cleaning, snow shoveling, grass cutting, brush removal, asphalt raking, and building cleaning.
  • Use tools like a pro : Maintain and operate various hand tools and small power equipment.
  • Lead and transport crews : Assist in transporting crews and maintaining tools while guiding temporary or part-time staff on projects.
  • Perform light repairs : Service and adjust equipment, and handle minor repairs on buildings, doors, windows, and more.
  • Support city events and emergencies : Contribute to event setups, snow removal, and other urgent tasks sometimes on nights and weekends.

Bonus Skills :

  • Experience with traffic control and pavement marking installation.
  • Familiarity with computer graphic software for sign fabrication.
  • Knowledge of light mechanical tasks like oil changes and part replacements.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities, but may require the occasional direction of helpers, seasonal employees, part-time and temporary employees.

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years related experience and / or training in the operation of motorized equipment and the performance of heavy manual labor;

or equivalent combination of education and experience

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of a valid appropriate class A, B, or C commercial driver's license within 6 months of employment
