About The Position
- Job Title : Surgical Technologist Job Specialty : Surgical Job Duration : 13 Weeks Shift : 10-hour day shift, 0630-1700, 5x8 Hr shifts Guaranteed Hours : 40 hours per week Experience : One year of experience in a surgical setting preferred;
- experience in a specialty field preferred License : Required for specific state regulations Certifications : Basic Life Support (American Heart Association);
Certification in Surgical Technology from the National Board Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or Certification as a Tech in Surgery from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) required Must-Have : - Basic computer skills - Ability to float to any location within sixty miles of the original assignment location Job Description : Assist the surgical team during operative procedures by arranging and inventorying sterile setups of instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Pass items to surgeons and nurses as needed.- Prepare and move patients as well as sterilize and clean instruments, equipment, and rooms.
- Use physician preference cards to identify supplies and equipment needed for procedures.- Set up sterile tables with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications / solutions needed for procedures.
- Properly label and report amounts of solutions and medications used for charting.- Prepare back tables and mayo stands, anticipating the needs of the surgeon using the preference card.
- Provide supplies or equipment upon request.- Assist with draping sterile fields; drape and cover operating and instrument tables.
- Perform appropriate counts with the circulator prior to the operation, before incision closure, and as needed.- Deliver surgical specimens and cultures from the operative field to the circulating nurse.
- Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during procedures.- Sterilize supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures.
- Review and replace supplies in the surgical case following a procedure.- Assist with terminal cleaning of the operating room and prepping for the next patient.
- Hold retractors or instruments, sponge or suction operative sites, apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, cut suture materials, connect drains to suction apparatus, and apply dressings.
- Provide on-call coverage outside of scheduled hours as per department and policy.- Effectively communicate with the surgeon and nursing staff, and anticipate potential complications.
- Demonstrate effective time management and prioritize workload effectively.- Maintain efficiency under stress and irregular working hours.
- Adhere to department procedures and accepted protocols.- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment as per standard precautions.
- Report any life safety issues or environmental concerns to the immediate supervisor.- Participate in quality improvement, evidence-based practice, research activities, professional development, and staff education.
- Adapt to rapidly changing technologies, policies, regulations, and staffing needs.
