New Shepard - Actuated Systems Sustaining & Operations Engineer II

Blue Origin
Seattle, WA, United States
$89.8K-$119.8K a year
Full-time

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion.

Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the New Shepard program. New Shepard is a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Karman line - the internationally recognized boundary of space.

Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space.

As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of system experts, you will be the first line of support when the vehicle production, maintenance, and operation teams encounter technical discrepancies in New Shepard's actuated (hydraulic and mechanical) systems.

In this role, you will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on the Actuated Subsystem and related Ground Support Equipment (GSE).

You will investigate root cause and disposition hardware discrepancies both on and off our human spaceflight vehicles. You will author specifications and procedures for design, production, and maintenance efforts.

You will train for and participate in operations support during missions. You will assist in the identification and implementation of design changes to improve system reliability and reduce operational costs.

You will support vehicle managers in assessing technical risk at mission readiness reviews. Finally, as needed, you will travel to our West Texas launch facility to provide hands-on support during missions and maintenance operations.

This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Our best team members are flexible in constantly evolving environments, thorough, detail oriented and passionate. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight.

Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Qualifications :

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of experience with designing, operating, and diagnosing hydraulic systems and hardware (actuators, valves, motors, mechanisms, etc.).
  • Basic proficiency in 3D CAD programs (Creo Pro / E preferred).
  • Basic proficiency in structural analysis including hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis (ANSYS preferred).
  • Ability to communicate detailed technical recommendations to resolve discrepancies and anomalies.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills. Must be able to track, manage, and prioritize multiple simultaneous tasks and jobs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and task ownership, someone who demonstrates pride in all work and willingness to perform low-level tasks when needed.
  • Experience working in cross-discipline teams.
  • Up to 20% travel to our West Texas launch facility to support launch and maintenance operations of our human spaceflight vehicles.
  • Passion for advancing the commercial space industry and human spaceflight.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to our inclusive culture.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.

S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired :

  • 5+ years of experience with designing, operating, and diagnosing hydraulic systems and hardware (actuators, valves, motors, mechanisms, etc.).
  • Familiarity with typical aerospace hydraulic standards and best practices.
  • Experience with GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
  • Hands-on experience with machining, building, testing, and maintaining mechanical components and systems.
  • Test instrumentation and data acquisition experience.
  • Experience with engineering support of field operations.
  • Experience with root cause analysis.
  • Experience with high voltage systems.
