Department : Diagnostic Overall Purpose of the Position :
The ultrasound sonographer is responsible for independently producing two-dimension ultrasonic recording of internal organs, using ultrasound equipment.
Ultrasound is used by physicians to aid in diagnosis of a disease and to evaluate body organs. While providing patient care and customer service, the sonographer must perform and complete the following : requisition evaluation, patient assessment, room preparation, patient management, equipment operation, technique selection, positioning skills, image processing, and image evaluation.
Major Job Responsibilities : Percentage :
1. Assessment & Exam :
- Confirms patient information and verifies the procedure prescribed.
- Selects equipment for use in ultrasound setup according to specifications of procedure.
- Reviews the patient's chart and the physician's request to determine optimal scanning parameters.
- Explains process to patient and instructs and assists patient in assuming the physical position for procedure.
- Ensures that services are performed in a safe environment in accordance with established guidelines.
- Ensures that ultrasound and other related equipment are maintained, clean and that operation of such items complies with established guidelines.
- Conducts a variety of ultrasound procedures under the direction and supervision of a radiologist.
- Maintains aseptic techniques, as well as complying with isolation techniques when performing a procedure.
- Discusses test results with radiologist or attending physician.
- Ensure data transfer to radiologist workstations and facility archive.
- Creates compact disc of patient data / images when requested.
- Demonstrates abilities using RIS / PACS which includes but not limited to sending and retrieving data, document scanning, correct order entry, billing, and correction of data errors.
Requires knowledge of downtime procedures.
2. Quality Control :
- Complete procedures as requested in accordance with quality control standards to ensure quality patient care.
- Reports equipment problems and unsafe conditions to the manager to achieve problem resolution.
- Restocks and maintains assigned work station / equipment in an orderly fashion.
- Provides in-service training to other staff as appropriate and required.
- Assists in identifying operational problems and implementing changes as necessary.
- Ensures that protocol and procedure manuals include recommended criteria and are reviewed and revised on a regular basis.
3. Records and Documentation :
- Documents diagnostic, treatment, and patient data in the appropriate record.
- Documentation must be timely, accurate, concise, and complete.
- Documents any exceptions from the established criteria or procedures.
- Records diagnostic or treatment data (including records necessary for billing of patient services) and performs routine archiving status checks and deletes data according to established guidelines.
- Maintains documentation of QA activities, procedures, and results in accordance with established guidelines.
4. Other Duties :
- Cross trains and performs duties and responsibilities which are within the scope of practice allowed by their license, in other imaging modalities, as required or requested, for which the employee is competent and qualified, as part of an ongoing program to enhance employee development and provide for maximum utilization of staff and services within related fields.
- Adhere to patient safety / infection control polices and procedures, facility rules and regulations, policies and procedures, professional code of ethics, regulatory agency guidelines and requirements, and accreditation standards.
- Maintains professional and cordial relationship with patients, staff members, medical staff, etc.
- Maintains competencies and license through continuing education within appropriate time frame.
- Uses the principles of growth and development to assess each patient's age-specific needs and provide age-specific treatment and care.
- Uses the principles of pain management in assisting each patient to be as comfortable and pain-free as possible by assessing, treating and educating patient and family.
- Uses knowledge of different cultures to assess each patient's cultural specific needs and provide cultural specific treatment and care.
- Compliance with mandatory in-service requirements, e.g., patient's rights, crisis prevention, annual mandatory health and safety, etc.
- Maintains the strictest confidentiality of all facility and facility related employee / patient information.
- Participates in activities of department, i.e., safety, performance improvement, and infection control.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications : Desired Skills & Knowledge :
General knowledge of imaging equipment and ultrasound physics, safety, medical terminology and department protocols. General knowledge of standard precautions, rules and regulations, government regulatory requirements and accrediting standards.
Basic knowledge of cross sectional anatomy. Ability to read, write, speak and understand simple sentences in English; follow oral and written instructions precisely;
get along well with others; and demonstrate an attitude of respect and professionalism.
Code of Ethics : ability to meet the specific needs of patients with a variety of disabilities; retain emotional stability and maturity despite emotional and physical pressures;
demonstrated ability to use independent judgment and initiative. Ability to promote a positive, collaborative practice atmosphere.
Licensure & Certification :
A current American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS).
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements :
Employees must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.
The position may work on rotating shifts, with work on weekends and holidays.
Hourly Rate :
Starting @ $40.63; based on experience
