New Hanover County is actively searching for a Public Health Nurse Supervisor to serve as a leader in the School Health area.
The ideal candidate not only possesses exceptional nursing skills but also demonstrates strong leadership qualities to oversee the school nursing staff and take charge of school health services.
As part of our Public Health Department team, you will be responsible for training, overseeing, and assigning work to nurses serving in one or more New Hanover County public schools, ensuring access to training and education, monitoring student care, evaluating and supporting the school health program, and promoting a healthy school environment.
We are specifically seeking individuals with a proven track record of nursing leadership, able to provide guidance and direction to new and experienced school nurse staff members, deliver impactful presentations, conduct thorough assessments of student health status and needs, and evaluate the effectiveness of health programs based on data.
Join us in this role, where you will provide direct patient care, supervise nursing services and public health programs, and contribute to community outreach activities that promote public awareness of health issues.
Essential Duties :
Supervises staff to include prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained;
and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
Supervises school health services which includes monitoring and providing patient care; ensuring compliance with applicable health program standards;
auditing records; and ensuring quality and efficiency of services.
- Participates in planning and implementing disease prevention and wellness programs; collaborates with division manager on staff and program issues.
- Acts as a health department liaison to other healthcare providers and agencies.
- Performs community outreach and education.
- Inventories and ensures availability of healthcare supplies and educational materials.
- Collaborates with Community Partners to facilitate outreach events and Public Health clinical experience for students and interns.
- Provides skilled nursing procedures which may include the performance of specialized procedures and administering immunizations;
dispensing, delivering or administering appropriate medications and vaccines; performing screening tests; and audits patient records for follow-up.
- Consults with the School Health Manager and collaborate with other supervisors to integrate, coordinate and prioritize public health nursing activities.
- Assures that safe, efficient and effective health services are provided in accordance with agency policies and procedures and program standards to include program chart audits.
- Develops prevention activities and provide community awareness educational programs on community preparedness.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
- Performs work during emergency / disaster situations.

Hours :
8 : 00 AM - 5 : 00 PM, Monday - Friday.
Must be available to report for emergency work assignment during emergency situations.
Salary Information :
The hiring range for this position is $71,920 - $97,091.50. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.
Bilingual candidates are eligible for a differential (5%) when performing Spanish language interpretation during the course of work.

Qualifications
Required Education and Experience :
Graduation from a 2 years of public health nursing experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a valid RN license with eligibility to practice in NC at the time of application.

Licenses / Certifications
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License and good driving record. If out of state driver's license, must have a valid NC driver's license by the first date of employment.
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license with eligibility to practice nursing in the state of North Carolina.
- Nurses without a Bachelor of Science in Nursing must complete the North Carolina Credentialed Public Health Nurse course within one (1) year of employment.
- Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR and AED) by the American Heart Association.
- Must obtain National School Nurse certification within three (3) years as a condition of continued employment.

Other Information

Funding :
Funding for this position is through a public health infrastructure grant, which is expected to last through June 2026 or according to the availability of those funds and / or the needs of the department.
Once appropriated funds are exhausted, a request to fund this position beyond June 2026 is expected.
