Position Type : Full-Time (37.5+ hours / week), Exempt

Reports To : Assistant Director of Operations

Pay Rate : $75,733 - $79,560 / year

Position Overview :

JFS is looking for a compassionate, mission-driven individual to join the Migrant Shelter team in the role of Shelter Manager.

In this role, you can use your strong coordination and critical problem-solving skills, and leadership experience to make a meaningful difference in your community and help change lives.

The Manager plays an integral role on the team and supports the Immigration Division by guiding programming, operations, performance, and supervision of the shelter program.

This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of San Diego Rapid Response Network Supportive Services - Operations and works closely with the rest of the Migrant Shelter leadership team.

The Shelter Manager in conjunction with the Site Coordinator, provides supervision and administrative support to the shelter operation.

The Shelter Manager is accountable, collaborative, transparent, proactive, and will demonstrate the ability to lead and coach program staff to accomplish established objectives.

This position requires excellent relationship-building and collaboration skills, superb organizational skills and attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.

They are someone who excels at bridging the gap between the day-to-day tasks and the larger goals or vision of a program.

They understand this connection themselves and are skilled at effectively communicating it to the rest of the team. This position supervises other shelter leadership positions.

Responsibilities :

  • Oversee programming and operations.; Ensure that all program policies and rules are implemented fairly and consistently
  • Serve as a first point of contact during emergencies and conduct applicable follow- up
  • Coordinate with external JFS partners to include hotel management, meal vendor, facilities vendors, volunteers and visiting groups, tours, medical providers, transportation vendor, and any contracted staff
  • Monitor shared emails, phone lines, and voicemails and for critical operational communication
  • Assist in and / or coordinate the development and revision of procedure and processes as needed
  • Quickly process and manage a constantly evolving environment, including operational procedures
  • Maintain working knowledge and awareness of all current operational processes / procedures
  • Maintain careful records for any cash / card handling, and other relevant financial processes
  • Support staff through conflict resolution, and / or recognize when needed to step in to help resolve a conflict or it must be referred to a higher level
  • Mentor & support staff in providing wraparound support to guests; including support and morale of the workforce
  • Ensure that the program is providing services from a trauma-informed perspective
  • In partnership with shelter leadership, monitor accuracy and efficiency of data input into client data
  • Actively participate in leadership meetings
  • May need to assist guests directly when no other staff is available
  • Request support, supplies, and equipment through designated channels
  • Coordinate with the JFS Facilities team to ensure the Reception Center remains safe, well-kept, and compliant with all applicable guidelines
  • Liaise between shelter leadership team and the Shelter Directors
  • Ensure clear and concise communication flow between all members of the workforce
  • Organize and brief staff on each day's tasks and responsibilities; team members receive clear instruction for each shift
  • Support with communicating and ensuring adherence to JFS employee policies
  • Support with staffing coverage plans
  • Prepare and conduct applicant interviews
  • Other projects as assigned

Skills / Experience / Abilities That Are a Must-Have :

  • Bilingual in (Spanish / Haitian Creole / English) or another common shelter language
  • Associates / bachelor's degree in related field and / or at least 1-year experience
  • At least 2 years' previous leadership experience required, including direct supervision of staff
  • Must have a valid CA driver's license, a clean driving record, insurance, a reliable personal vehicle, and a willingness to travel off-site
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

Skills / Abilities We'd Like You to Have :

  • Emergency Management Experience preferred, but not required
  • Knowledge and experience in case management basics and job skills training
  • Deep understanding the concept of trauma-informed care
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including regular evening hours (at least 1-2 per week) and weekends
  • Skilled in managing employee relations, including conflict resolution, corrective action, and terminations

  • Lifting - Raising Objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position

  • Hearing - Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication
  • Repetitive Motion - Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and / or fingers
