Departmental Overview
The Office of Environment, Health & Safety's (EH&S) mission is to provide guidance and services to the campus community that promote health, safety, and environmental stewardship.
EH&S is a highly dynamic, fast paced, committed organization focused on promoting workplace safety and environmental protection for the campus community.
Position Summary
The Hazardous Waste Manager serves as the campus subject matter expert for hazardous waste, hazardous waste operations and manages all operational components of the campus hazardous waste program, including leadership and guidance to technical and professional staff in the area of hazardous material management.
Responsibilities
Provides technical leadership, functional guidance and management of the campus hazardous waste operations.
- Supervises professional and technical personnel in the area of Hazardous Materials Management.
- Ensures staff are fully and properly trained to meet mandatory training requirements of positions.
- Develops new procedures and processes for hazardous waste program and recommends improvements to existing procedures and processes.
Provides oversight for implementation of hazardous materials management operations :
- Chemical waste pick-up, sorting and classifying, packing / labeling, transportation, disposal, and record keeping for on-site and off-site facilities.
- Chemical reuse, tracking and redistribution.
- Hazardous waste minimization.
Campus Hazardous Waste Expert :
- Performs complex professional hazardous materials and hazardous waste management functions.
- Provides direction and guidance on complex environmental issues for hazardous waste handling and disposal.
- Trains or recommends trainings for all waste workers in technical, regulatory, and policy-based program requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of appropriate regulations related to generation, handling, and management and disposal of chemical waste.
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of EH&S technical requirements.
- Skills to effectively direct and supervise subordinate staff.
- Demonstrated written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills.
- Proven skills to organize, prioritize and complete projects.
- Solid skills to appropriately respond to emergencies and critical situations.
- Skills to effectively integrate several highly regulated subject and program areas.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Salary & Benefits
This is a full-time, career position eligible for the full range of UC Benefits.
The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $98,600 - $141,500, annually.
