The City of Pasadena - Public Works Department is currently seeking an experienced Electrician to perform journey level work on a wide variety of electrical devices, systems, and facilities ranging from millivolts to 600 volts in accordance with all electrical and building code requirements.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will be versatile in the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of electrical controls, panels and switchboards, and other electrical equipment and devices.

Candidate should have experience in motor control and control wiring Pre-scheduled Lighting Controls; Programmable Logic Controls.

Candidate must have an Electrician certification issued from the State of California. This person will have excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.

They will be a dependable team player who is safety focused, works well independently, and has a strong work ethic. The ideal candidate must be able to work weekends and holidays.

  • Installs, moves, maintains, services, troubleshoots and / or repairs electrical controls, receptacles, switches, relays, circuits, circuit breakers, regulators, switch boxes, electrical fixtures, generators, motors, backup power supply, lighting systems, electrical components of hoists and overhead cranes and other equipment and devices.
  • Installs conduit, wiring and cables; performs inspections to ensure safe operations and working condition and to identify need for repair or replacement.
  • Tests, troubleshoots, calibrates and performs preventive maintenance on a variety of electrical and electronic systems and devices such as intercommunications and access control systems, instrumentation and supervisory control systems, alarm systems, annunciator systems and digital control and recording systems;

designs, fabricates, installs and maintains documentation on EMS, RF sound, CCTV and MATV systems and fiber optics.

  • Performs preventive maintenance and repair of electrical devices, equipment and facilities including cleaning and replacing control apparatus, power components and parts on motors, controls, panels, switchboards and HVAC equipment.
  • Conducts annual tests of electrical equipment, emergency power generators, fire pumps and fire alarms.
  • Plans and lays out work from work orders and oral and written instructions; requisitions necessary tools, equipment and supplies to meet work order requirements.
  • Works at heights on ladders, boom trucks, and aerial lifts.
  • Reads and interprets manuals, blueprints, schematic diagrams, sketches and drawings; revises and design systems as needed;

makes sketches and As-Builts of modifications and system designs made.

Uses tools and equipment of the trade including electrical test equipment such as meggers, voltmeters, ammeters and ohmmeters;

operates portable electrical tools and other small or portable electrical equipment.

  • Follows all safety rules and regulations and safe work practices. Maintains records of work performed.
  • Provides work guidance and direction to assigned helpers and trainees. May drive a City vehicle to work sites.
  • Oversees and inspects the work of contractors and inspectors for City elevators.

When assigned to Construction :

  • Constructs and installs new electrical services for new and existing facilities including underground vaults, conduit systems, pull boxes, transformers, switchgear and interior power distribution systems.
  • Installs, maintains, relocates and repairs conduits, lighting circuits, panels, regulators, relays, circuit breakers, switchboards and electrical fixtures.

When assigned to Rose Bowl events :

Provides maintenance, tactical support and temporary power for Rose Bowl events including cable and fiber optic connections for televised media, video, scoreboard and electronic advertising signs, sound setup, concession stands and credentialing trailers;

installs and maintains wireless and fiber optic communication distribution systems for ticketing, credit card payments, scanning, credentialing and CCTV security systems.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.

A typical example of this would be : completion of a recognized Electrician Apprenticeship program and three years increasingly responsible recent experience in installing and repairing electrical systems and equipment.

Electrician certification issued from the State of California is required.

Desirable :

Completion of Apprenticeship program, commercial and public sector experience, and 5 or more years of experience.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process will consist of an evaluation of training and experience and the most highly qualified candidates may be invited to participate in either a written, oral, or performance examination, and department interview.

VACANCY INFORMATION

There is currently one vacancy in the Building Systems and Fleet Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill this vacancy and similar vacancies in the future.

Candidates selected for this position are subject to a one-year probationary work period.Possession of a Class C California Driver's License is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.

Possession of a Class B California Driver's License is preferred.

Electricians are subject to 24-hour emergency call-out, and therefore must have a telephone. Work schedule may be day or swing shift, including weekends.

Overtime may be required.

Electrician certification issued from the State of California is required.
