DESCRIPTION

The Department of Psychology (http : / / psy.ucsd.edu / ) consistently ranks among the top experimental psychology programs in the country.

Currently there are 32 faculty, 5 research faculty, 30 staff and 80 graduate students.

Using skills as an experienced Student Services professional, provides the full range of student services within the Psychology Department, and with collaborating departments.

Independently advises students and resolves student services-related issues on the full range of academic issues inherent within the organization.

Advises faculty and management on a variety of student issues. Works with the department's, school's, and college's management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures.

Guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs is provided by offices specializing in those fields, e.

g., the financial aid office, graduate division, or student learning center, OR by the chair / dean and faculty of the department / school / college.

Manages funds for student programs.

The Student Affairs Manager in Psychology is responsible and accountable for the overall development, coordination and management of all programmatic activities related to Psychology Department's graduate program (PhD) and undergraduate programs (BA, BS including joint majors with other units, minors) and the newly established undergraduate minor and graduate MA programs in the Computational Social Science program.

Duties include the management of : curriculum and programs, advising, admissions, outreach and recruitment, scheduling, registration, and staffing of instructional programs.

Provide statistical analysis for the department on graduate and undergraduate matters. Responsible for outreach activities, programs and development efforts including : identification of fellowships and scholarships, internship and employment opportunities.

Identify and strategically develop financial support for graduate and undergraduate programs. Responsible for the planning, management, hiring and coordination of student support to include Graduate Student Researchers, TA funds, Fellowships, Block Grant Allocations and other fund sources, and independently manage these funds as well graduate travel, outreach and enrichment funds.

The incumbent is also responsible for the management of Student Affairs including : supervision, process re-engineering and automation, training, workload distribution, and the technological infrastructure of the unit.

Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated experience in a Student Affairs Operation, advising and counseling. Demonstrated experience with and theoretical knowledge of graduate and undergraduate students and curriculum administration;

fiscal; personnel; and external relations. Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Ability to analyze policies and procedures and advise students, faculty, administrators and others about requirements.

Demonstrated understanding of the philosophy of quality service and group process, with proven aptitude for working as part of a team.

Sophisticated knowledge of student information systems related systems and the technology services required for office operations.

  • Knowledge of systems; grading, transcript, and diploma production; student academic records management; document management systems;
  • verification of enrollment; graduation and commencement; student fees, fee assessment and refunds; information / communication services and publications;

and Curriculum, Course Scheduling, and Classroom Management.

Demonstrated experience in a supervisory role including responsibility for hiring, delegating, directing work, training, evaluating performance, disciplining, and resolving complaints.

Ability to adjust to shifting priorities and work under short deadline situations while maintaining composure.

Strong, demonstrated fiscal / accounting skills. Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of finance, general accounting practices, business management, fund accounting, audit trails, and use of cost-centers

Ability in problem identification and reasoning. Strong analytical, inductive and deductive reasoning skills. Strong demonstrated problem-solving skills.

Ability to assess funding / staff problems and skill to identify logical solution. Ability to analyze work situations and implement long range plans to develop systems and procedures to fulfill complex organizational needs.

Interpersonal skills. Excellent communication skills, written and verbal. Ability to write concisely, persuasively, and in summary form.

Skill to compose, edit and proofread narrative sections of printed information. Ability to express verbally one's position, plan of action, evaluation or interpretation in a professional, concise, and courteous manner.

Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to represent UCSD appropriately to internal and external constituents.

Must be skilled at negotiating conflicts among staff, faculty, and students.

Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.

Ability to formulate and retain sight of long range plans and goals while dealing with a myriad of day-to-day problems.

Ability to work independently exercising initiative and judgment in the performance of responsibilities. Strong leadership, organizational, negotiation, decision-making and management practices skill.

Creativity to analyze and solve unusual and new problems in ways that establish effective and efficient procedures.

Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.

Skill in determining suitable utilization of computer applications to performance of task. Ability to modify existing programs as appropriate.

Working knowledge of MSWord, PowerPoint, and Access. Advanced working knowledge of Excel and demonstrated ability to develop complex statistical analysis, forecasts and data projections for department graduate and undergraduate matters.

Envisioning, conceptualizing, and actualizing ideas to broaden and further the department's strategic and instructional aims.

Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Demonstrated ability to extract pertinent information from computerized databases and other sources, conduct analysis, and prepare proposals and reports.

Theoretical knowledge of computer and information management.

Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.

Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills to prioritize assignments, goal setting, and departmental needs, while meeting deadlines.

Ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities at the same time.

Strong demonstrated understanding of good management, administrative and personnel practices. Supervisory skills and demonstrated experience to monitor production and quality of work and set performance standards;

to assess staff capabilities and assign and redistribute work; and to teach / train staff in all aspects of job duties / responsibilities.

Proven record of successful supervisory experience in people- and customer-service oriented environment.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range : $56,700 - $97,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent : $27.16 - $46.70

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.

The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.

The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
