General Description and Classification Standards
Provides support to nursing staff (RNs or LPNs) in performing tasks associated with screening detainees and in providing routine providing routine treatment services in a detention center clinic.
This is a medical support position and certification / licensures may be required. Use of this class should be restricted to a medical clinic setting only and positions should exist only where nursing or other medical professional positions are also present and filled.
Supervision Received
Works under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse and follows standard procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

- Collects and records vital signs from patients.
- Collects fluid samples from patients and processes in accordance with protocols and accepted medical standards.
- Cleans wounds, changes dressings, and provides other assistance as directed.
- Cleans work areas and ensures appropriate supplies are stocked.
- Maintains records of work performed as required by process and medial protocols.
- Provides direct assistance to nurses, physicians and other medical personnel in treating patients.
- Stabilizes or restrains patients when required.
Decision Making
Follows standardized procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.

- Knowledge of basic clinical and medical processes appropriate to an institutional clinic setting
- Ability to communicate with potentially difficult or impaired patients.
- Ability to collect blood and other fluid samples in accordance with proper medical practice and in an efficient manner.
- Reading and writing skills appropriate to medical records and clinic environment.
