Extension Professional II (Program Manager) Posting Number req19692 Department Maricopa County Office Department Website Link Location Greater Phoenix Area Address Phoenix, AZ USA Position Highlights The newly established University of Arizona Center for Urban Smart Agriculture (CUSA) is seeking a Manager to its Extension Urban Agriculture Production, Small-Scale and Beginning Farmer Program (the Program).

The Center and Program maintain focused statewide efforts on aspects related to small-scale and beginning farmers in urban settings.

The Program is strategically focused on issue-driven challenges and opportunities prioritized by clientele and is well positioned to be competitive for funds regionally and nationally.

The Program Manager is a full-time, in-person position located at the University of Arizona Maricopa County Cooperative Extension in Phoenix.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Center Director / Program Leader and team members to Deliver on CUSA's missions, objectives, and goals, as well as develop an effective Extension and applied research programs in Urban Agriculture Production relevant to small-scale and beginning farmers in Arizona.

The focus will be to integrate problem-solving research and educational activities that improve the economic efficiency of food production systems while minimizing adverse environmental impacts, especially against the backdrop of a variable and changing climate, and conservation of our natural resources.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate efforts with established University of Arizona and multi-university teams to identify, prioritize, develop, implement, synthesis, and evaluate of extension and applied research programs based on locally identified needs of Urban Agriculture Production for small-scale and beginner Farmer.
  • Creatively apply own knowledge, skills, and experience in agriculture production / area of expertise to solve problems and deliver solutions for the end-users in collaboration with the Director, team members, relevant faculty in Cooperative Extension, CUSA, the College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences and other colleges and institutions.
  • Interact and supervise team members and students and communicate with outside / community agencies in facilitating the Center and program objectives.
  • Engage the CUSA Director, CUSA Steering and Advisory Committees and relevant teams of faculty and staff to address Center and program priorities in Arizona and regionally.
  • Design experimental and field studies, conduct statistical analysis of collected data, write protocols, reports, publications, and publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and other venues.
  • Travel and assist with research and extension aspects of projects that are conducted at remote sites, as necessary. Organize, develop, and assist in on-farm participatory research and demonstration in collaboration with the CUSA and program team members.
  • Organize, develop, and facilitate workshops, meetings, or conferences, including coordinates logistics, scheduling, and participant communications.
  • Stimulate, lead, and participate in new and existing efforts to secure competitive funds including grant-writing, budgeting and reporting with assistance and input from the Center Director, CUSA Steering and Advisory Committees and other faculty and staff.
  • Represent CUSA and the program interests at state, regional, and national venues as appropriate.
  • Manage and assist in preparing an annual Center report, as well as all program and CUSA efforts at the University of Arizona and externally.
  • Develop, implement, deliver, and evaluate relevant Extension programs target audiences using diverse methods and media.
  • Build collaborations with other agencies and organizations for the urban agriculture production community and beginner farmers and in collaboration with the faculty and other staff.

Ability to present and communicate in a manner appropriate for comprehension and use by a wide variety of diverse audiences;

write for clear comprehension by both program clients and academicians; and collaborate productively with peers and professionals both within and outside the University system.

  • Ability to work independently, to interact effectively and directly with stakeholders and team members, and to travel throughout the state and region.
  • Ability to be responsive to changes in the competitive climate of grant-funding.
  • Skilled in the use of computers and related technology, including but not limited to word processing, PowerPoint, Excel, statistic software.

Physical Requirementsand Environmental Demands :

  • Employee is frequently required to lift / move / transport a certain amount of weight.
  • Employee may have to perform work outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions.
  • Employee may have to experience high levels of noise, vibration, hazards including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals in a work setting.
  • Employee may be exposed to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in agronomy, plant science, soil science, crops science, environmental sciences, horticulture, entomology, plant pathology, weed science or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University .

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in agronomy, plant science, soil science, crops science, environmental sciences, horticulture, entomology, plant pathology, weed science or related discipline.
  • Experience with Cooperative Extension programming.
  • Experience in grantsmanship.
