Description : Position Summary

Position Summary

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford (UICOMR) seeks a Child Abuse Pediatrician for a faculty position.

The rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor of Clinical Pediatrics will be commensurate with experience.

The position will involve a well-rounded commitment to research, clinical practice in the field of child abuse, and other clinical activities relevant to the individual's specialty.

The research aspect entails taking a leadership role in developing a robust research program within the department.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as Co-Medical Director of MERIT, a non-hospital-based UICOMR child abuse program providing outpatient medical evaluations for minors suspected of abuse or neglect and inpatient consults at all three Rockford hospitals.
  • Conduct clinical research in the field of Child Abuse Pediatrics, involving activities such as grant acquisition, study design, data collection and analysis, result interpretation, and publication.

Additionally, provide leadership within the department to establish and advance clinical research initiatives in Child Abuse Pediatrics.

Provide clinical services to patients and families in cases where child maltreatment is suspected or identified, including outpatient evaluations and inpatient and ED consults in collaboration with pediatric hospitalists, pediatric specialties, and hospital social workers.

Includes some on-call coverage for nights and weekends (shared responsibility). Serve as a key member of an interprofessional team, including physicians, specialty child abuse nurse practitioners, and administrative staff.

Some travel is required to surrounding counties.

  • Collaborate with law enforcement officers, district attorneys, and child protective services, and provide court testimony as required.
  • Provide other clinical activities relevant to the individual's specialty, including medical assessments and examinations of infants, children, and adolescents, the diagnosis and treatment of common pediatric conditions, injuries, and illnesses, as well as the provision of preventive care services like vaccinations, health screenings, and health consultations.
  • Participate in teaching medical students, residents, and other health professionals.
  • Provide educational sessions as needed to local health professionals, child welfare professionals, law enforcement, and the legal community.
  • Provide consultations for multidisciplinary team members.
  • Participate in local, regional, or national child abuse activities.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD / DO or its foreign equivalent and completion of an ACGME-accredited residency program in Pediatrics.
  • Board certified or board eligible in Child Abuse Pediatrics.
  • Prior experience working in Child Abuse Pediatrics with demonstrated expertise in managing child abuse and neglect cases.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel and secure reliable transportation for local and out-of-county travel, including availability for on-call duty for nights and weekends as needed.

Transportation costs are reimbursed in accordance with UIC policies.
